LYNCHBURG, Va. - Campbell (11-8, 6-4 BSC) cut Liberty's lead to seven points with 15:27 remaining in the contest, but the Flames (13-6, 9-1 BSC) took control with a 23-4 run over the next eight minutes as the Lady Camels fell 64-40 inside the Vines Center on Saturday afternoon.
The run left Campbell trailing 57-31 with 7:01 to play, and the Lady Camels were unable to close the gap any closer than 20 the rest of the way.
For the game, Campbell was held to just 14-of-57 (24.6 percent) shooting, but went 3-of-8 from beyond the arc in the second half en route to knocking down four three-pointers for the game. Liberty shot 41.8 percent (28-of-67) for the contest.
Redshirt junior RaeChaun Edwards and senior Kiera Gaines led Campbell with eight points apiece, and sophomore Amanda Coffer led the squad with seven rebounds.
Liberty's Ashley Rininger led all scorers with 27 points on 13-of-14 shooting and finished with a double-double after collecting a game-high 10 rebounds.
Despite falling into a 6-2 hole over the first four minutes, Campbell staged a rally with six unanswered points over the next two and a half minutes, emerging with its first lead of the game, 8-6, after a three-pointer by senior Summer Leverette at the 14:18 mark.
Both sides matched nearly basket-for-basket over the next five minutes, and a put-back by Rininger with 8:52 on the clock knotted the game at 15-15. That bucket proved to be the beginning of a 13-0 run for the Flames, culminating in another Rininger layup with 4:24 to play that left Campbell trailing 26-15.
The Lady Camels battled back, cutting Liberty's lead to seven points, 28-21, heading into the halftime break.
A 6-0 run by Liberty to open the second half was quickly erased by three-pointers from Edwards and freshman Summer Price, again pushing the Lady Camels back within single digits at 34-27, but a three-pointer from Liberty's Karly Buer pushed the lead back to 10 points and began the decisive 23-4 in the game.
Five of Liberty's nine baskets during the run came from beyond the arc, with Buer knocking down a pair and Jaymee Fisher-Davis hitting a trio of shots from deep. Freshman Sarah Smith's first career three-pointer ended the run with 4:26 remaining as Campbell trailed 57-34.
Campbell will conclude its three-game Big South road trip in its next time out as the Lady Camels travel to Clinton, S.C., to face Presbyterian on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. In the first meeting this season in Buies Creek on Dec. 30, Campbell overcame a two-point halftime deficit to defeat the Blue Hose 58-45.
