Lady Camels drop 51-42 decision at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. - With Campbell (11-9, 6-5 BSC) trailing by just one, 39-38, with 8:34 remaining, Presbyterian (11-9, 6-5 BSC) used an 8-2 run over the next seven minutes to hold off a spirited Lady Camels rally in the second half as Campbell fell 51-42 on Tuesday evening.

Senior Summer Leverette led the Lady Camels with 14 points, while redshirt junior RaeChaun Edwards and freshman Krystal Mangum added six apiece.

Sophomore Amanda Coffer's second half block also notched a place in the record books for the Summerfield, N.C., native. Now with 34 blocks this season, Coffer owns the top two single-season block totals in Lady Camel history after setting the record with 41 as a freshman.

As a team, Campbell finished 17-of-55 (30.9 percent) from the floor and knocked down six three-pointers, its most since connecting on seven against Gardner-Webb (Jan. 13).

Presbyterian went 16-of-43 (37.2 percent) from the field and hit 16 of its 20 (80 percent) of its free throws. Keyonna Allen of the Blue Hose led all scorers with 15 points.

Campbell fell into an early hole as Presbyterian scored the first five points out of the gate, all from Elizabeth Landers. A jumper from Leverette and a three-pointer from Mangum cut the deficit to a single possession, but each time the Blue Hose were able to rebuild their five-point advantage.

Presbyterian used an 11-3 spurt midway through the first half to build its largest lead of the period. Janie Miles keyed the run with five points and Allen added four more for the Blue Hose, who held a 25-14 lead with 1:08 to play at the conclusion of the run.

The Lady Camels rebounded over the final minute, however, as Leverette scored the final five points of the half, including a three-pointer with five seconds remaining. Campbell entered the locker room trailing only 25-19 after the quick burst.

Campbell came out firing in the second half, cutting Presbyterian's lead to just one as Coffer netted five unanswered points to begin the period. Three free throws from the Blue Hose rebuilt a four-point lead, but an Edwards three-pointer with 14:45 remaining again cut the lead to just one.

Over the next two minutes, the Lady Camels pulled even on three separate occasions but could not grab the lead. Edwards could not connect on the back end of a one-and-one with the score knotted at 28-28, and jumpers by Allen and Rebecca Walker staved off Campbell's efforts to move ahead.

Two buckets by freshman Summer Price and senior Juli Osborne again pulled Campbell within one, 39-38, with 8:34 left, but Presbyterian's aforementioned 8-2 run left the Lady Camels trailing 47-40 with 1:57 to play. A layup from Leverette cut the lead to five, but Campbell could not close the gap any further.

The Lady Camels will return home on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. as Longwood makes the trip to Gore Arena. Campbell defeated the Lancers 65-58 in Farmville, Va., on Jan. 3 behind a career-high 22 points from Price, and leads the all-time series by a 9-4 margin, including a perfect 7-0 mark in Buies Creek.
