CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern outscored Campbell 7-0 over the final 41.3 seconds and rallied for a 74-71 win Monday night at the CSU Field House.
Campbell had the ball leading 71-70 when Nehemiah Mabson missed a baseline jumper. Saah Nimley rebounded and fed Cedrick Bowen for a breakaway slam with 1.7 seconds to go. Campbell then turned the ball over on the inbound pass and Nimley made a pair of free throws with 0.8 ticks remaining for the final margin.
In a game of runs, the host Buccaneers (7-6, 1-1 Big South) made the last one to overcome 37 percent shooting from the floor. Campbell (7-8, 1-1) shot 50 percent from the field and made 13-of-26 threes, but only 8-of-19 (.421) from the free throw line and yielded 16 second-chance points.
Nimley, listed at 5-foot-8, scored 22 points on 8-of-21 shooting, and 5-of-5 from the line, while grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. He made only 1-of-9 threes, but that one came with 41.3 seconds to go and cut the Camel advantage to just one (71-70). Will Saunders added 18 points on 6-of-13 from beyond the arc and Arlon Harper 17, plus 8 boards.
CSU hit 13-of-15 from the stripe (.867) and finished with a 43-35 edge on the glass.
Andrew Ryan (22) and Troy Harper (18) hit season scoring highs for the Camels, who led by 15 in the first half and by 69-63 after Curtis Phillips banked in a triple with 1:38 to go.
Ryan finished 6-of-9 from 3-point distance and pulled down 7 rebounds. Harper made 6-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-7 from long range.
Charleston Southern wrapped a 30-7 run around the break and led 51-41 after Aaron Wheeler's 3-point play with 13:51 to go. However, the Camels answered with a 16-0 burst capped by D.J. Mason's steal and slam that provided the visitors with a 59-53 lead with 7:53 remaining.
Campbell made 9 of its first 17 shots, including 6-of-11 threes and jumped to a 29-14 lead with 6:55 left in the opening half. However, the Bucs made 6 of their next 7 shots in a 15-0 burst and knotted the game on Aaron Wheeler's follow shot with 2:40 left in the period.
The teams played to a 34-34 deadlock after 20 minutes. Campbell shot 45.8 percent (11-24) from the field, 7-of-16 (.438) from 3-point range, and 41.7 percent (5-12) from the stripe. Ryan made 3-of-5 triples before the break, including one from the right wing in a 17-6 Camel run to push the margin to 28-14. Ryan finished the half with 11 points, while Harper came off the Camel bench to add 8 first-half points.
Arlon Harper scored CSU's first 10 points before another Buc made a shot. Saah Nimley and Will Saunders added 9 points apiece in the opening half.
Notes:
- Campbell stands 6-1 at Gore Arena this season, but is 1-7 on the road. CSU is 6-1 at home this season and has won 5-straight at the 881-seat CSU Field House, the smallest home facility among 351 Division I schools.
- Campbell returns to action Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at High Point.
