BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Shannon Wratchford scored the lone tally in the first half and Campbell's defensive powered the Fighting Camels to a 1-0 victory against Coastal Carolina Wednesday evening on Senior Night.

"Defensively, we played very well tonight. Everyone stepped up and played a very smart and disciplined defensive game tonight" head coach Stuart Horne said. "I thought that when we went forward we did very well and we were very efficient with our shots."

Prior to the contest, eight seniors of the Campbell women's soccer team were honored. Both goalkeepers, Samantha Lawson and Alexis Connors along with Marissa Hartert, Clark, Cydney Smith, Bailee Johnston, Michelle Procaccini and Anna Natt och Dag.

Coastal Carolina started off the match strong as it earned two of its five first half corner kicks in the opening two minutes of action.  The quick start from the Chanticleers tested the Campbell defense early, but proved resilient in its efforts in the early going.

The Chanticleers registered two more shots and added another corner kick to its tally before the Camels found offensive life. Throughout the opening 17 minutes, Campbell built its attack but the attempt towards goal were yet to be found.

In the 18^th minute Clark was able to generate the first shot towards frame for her side, a save by Becca Austin. Coastal continued to attack towards the Campbell goal, earning multiple shots and a pair of corner kicks in the 15 minutes following Clark's attempt.

Campbell opened the scoring in the 36^th minute. Ashley Clark delivered a bending cross to the far post, where Shannon Wratchford found open space and connected on a one-time shot, which proved to be the game-winning goal.

"I saw that everyone was focused on Ashley [Clark], I found an open area at the back post and worked to get a touch on the ball," Wratchford said.

Campbell's defensive efforts were not slowed in the second half as Coastal Carolina continued to mount attacks towards goal, looking for an equalizer.

In the 55^th minute the Camels had an opportunity to add to their lead as Clark registered a shot from inside the box but Austin made the diving save. Moments later, Wratchford collected Clark's rebound and put her shot inches passed the right post.

The Campbell defensive weathered multiple attacks late in the second half from the Chanticleers as Coastal earned multiple corner kicks and free kicks in the final ten minutes, but Lawson and her backline stood tall to preserve the victory.

Lawson earned her first start of the season, making three saves en route to her first complete game shutout on the 2015 campaign. 

"Sammy has been working very hard in training and earned the opportunity tonight with the start and took full advantage of it," Horne said. "She played an awesome game, came up big when needed and had great command of the team to keep them organized throughout the match."

The victory is the first against Coastal Carolina since 2011 for Campbell women's soccer. Campbell returns to action at Winthrop, Saturday Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
