BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Eric Rostlund scored his first career goal, but 11th-ranked Coastal Carolina held off visiting Campbell 2-1 Wednesday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
The Chanticleers (8-1-1, 3-1 Big South) scored twice in an 80-second span midway through the first half and made that lead stand to deal Campbell (4-6, 0-3) its third-straight loss. Sergio Camargo opened the scoring in the 21st minute; then Jair Espinoza hit the net in the 22nd for a lead that stood for more than an hour.
Campbell cut the deficit in half with just under three minutes remaining in the match when Josh Signey played the ball forward to Reafe Anderson, who curled a left-footed cross into the box. Rostlund volleyed in Anderson's service for just the sixth goal Coastal has surrendered in 10 matches this year.
The Camels dropped their fifth-straight to the Chants since re-joining the Big South in 2011. However, the winning margin was just one for the second-consecutive season following Coastal's 1-0 victory last year at Buies Creek. Coastal has been nationally-ranked each of the last five times the teams have met.
On the night, Coastal finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots, 7-3 in attempts on target. However, the Camels out-shot their hosts 6-4 in the final period.
CU had one last chance to equalize in the final seconds, but Reafe Anderson's effort was cleared away from outside the area with Fernando Pina off his line.
Matthew Mozynski finished the night with five saves – two at point-blank range – in the Camel nets. Pina had two stops while recording his sixth solo shutout of the year.
The Camels were unable to direct an effort on target until the 51st minute when Bradley Farias' effort forced a Pina save. Farias entered the match as the nation's fourth-leading scorer, but was held to just two shots in 82 minutes.
Campbell returns home Saturday to host Big South foe Gardner-Webb in a 5 p.m. kick-off before entertaining second-ranked North Carolina next Tuesday (Oct. 20).
