Farias scores but Camels fall to sixth-ranked Tar Heels

Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Bradley Farias scored his 12th goal of the season, but Campbell University suffered a 6-1 defeat to the visiting North Carolina Tar Heels on Tuesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

"We're disappointed in the outcome because we didn't feel like we played our best tonight," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder. "Against a quality team like Carolina if you don't play your best you get punished. It's our last non-conference match and all we can do now is pick ourselves back up and go after the last five Big South matches."

Farias, the reigning Big South Attacker of the Week, and Seth Jones found themselves on a two-on-one breakaway towards the Carolina goal late in the second half. Jones passed the ball on the run to Farias after racing past the Tar Heel defender and pushed the ball past UNC goal keeper Sam Euler into the lower right hand side of the goal. Jones was credited with his third assist of the season.

"The game didn't go our way tonight, but it was good that Bradley was able to find the back of the net," said Fonder. "He is in a really good form right now and I'm happy for him because he worked hard and deserved a positive outcome from this game."

North Carolina (12-1-1), ranked sixth in the latest NSCAA national poll, was led by Warren Marshall who scored the first two goals of the match. Marshall opened the scoring in the fifth minute after collecting a rebound off Campbell (5-7-0) goalkeeper Matthew Mozynski and buried the ball past the diving keeper.

Marshall struck again in the 24th minute after receiving the ball on the right side of the box and scored from about 20 yards out. The Tar Heels pushed their lead to 3-0 eight minutes later when Tucker Hume, who assisted on Marshall's first goal, collected a header from Nico Melo inside the box and pushed it past Mozynski.

Carolina took a 3-0 lead into halftime, but a goal by Andy Lopez just 27 seconds into the second half increased the tally. Lopez corralled a cross from David October inside the 18 and scored into the back right corner. Three minutes later, Melo created space for himself 30 yards from the Camel goal and fired a rocket past Mozynski as the score moved to 5-0.

Following Bradley's goal, Nyambi Jabang scored for the Tar Heels in the final minute on a breakaway. Jabang fired a shot that hit the left post and bounced into the goal past CU reserve goalkeeper Jeff Kennedy.

Campbell was awarded a free kick 35 yards out from the Carolina goal Tar Heel foul in the 15th minute. Josh Signey stepped up to take the kick and laced a beautiful ball towards the top right corner. Starting UNC goalkeeper James Pyle made an incredible save as he tipped the ball over the crossbar, but he was injured on the play and had to leave the contest. Mozynski finished with five saves in the losing effort.

The Camels will be back in action on Saturday when they return to Big South Conference play on the road at Presbyterian College. Kickoff from Clinton, South Carolina is set for 4 p.m.

"Our full preparation now turns to PC on Saturday and after that we just have to take them one at a time," Fonder stated. "The league race is very tight and we have a chance to move up if we can get results."
