Camels fall in four sets to High Point on Friday night

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Camels fell in four sets (18-25, 25-23, 19-25, 19-25) to the Panthers of High Point on Friday night. Katelyn Layden led the attack with 17 kills and 13 digs as Campbell moves to 9-13 overall and 3-5 in the Big South.

Two Camels recorded double-digit kills as Layden totaled 17 and Rachel Harty had 13 herself. Ramirez had her third 20-plus assist game while Summer Schuitema added 13 assists and tied with Mary Crema for the dig lead as each collected 23 on the night. 

The match between the two teams was a battle on both sides of the ball. The first set remained close as the score tied eight times early on. Neither team gained control of the until a kill by Molly Livingston put the Panthers up by two (14-12). The Camels recorded six more points but were unable to catch High Point who won set one 25-18. Harty and Jenny Tait recorded three kills each while Schuitema led the defense with 10 digs and Crema contributed six digs as well.

Set two started off with the Panthers opening up a six-point lead over the Camels (9-3). After a Campbell timeout, the home team went on 11-5 run to tie the game and gained the lead on an error by Amy Broadstreet. The Orange and Black carried the momentum to close out the set as they won 25-23. Layden recorded four kills for the Camels and Harty added three more kills and assisted on two blocks. Schuitema again led the defense with seven digs while Crema and Madison Linxwiler each collected six.

Coming out of the intermission both teams were fighting for control of the match. After trading points back and forth, High Point gained a one-point lead on a service ace by Camryn Frieberg. The Camels would come within four but ran out of time as the Panthers won the third set 25-19. Layden had seven of the 14 kills for the Camels while Crema had five digs to lead the defense. 

Fighting to keep the match alive the Camels came into the fourth set ready to play. Neither team relented as both teams traded points tying the game 10 times. The Panthers got a one-point lead on the Camels after an attack error on the home team that led to High Point winning the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

The Camels have a break before returning to action as they travel to Gardner-Webb, Friday, Oct. 30 and then head to UNC Asheville on the Halloween.
