CONWAY, S.C. – The Camels fall against Coastal Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 3 in three sets (21-25, 17-25, 23-25). Rachel Harty led the Camels in kills with 10 and had three block assists. Katelyn Layden was close behind with eight kills and led the defense with 11 digs. Campbell is now 5-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
"I thought we played well against an extremely talented team," said head coach Greg Goral. "We had our opportunities to win games one and three but came up a little short. Our team is growing in skill and confidence and it is showing out on the court."
Campbell had the lead early in the first set as the Camels and Chanticleers traded points. McKenzie Fell tied the game at 10 all, but a Lian Bernett kill gave Coastal the lead that would never be relinquished. The Orange and Black fell 25-21 in a close first set. Harty led the Camels with six kills as the team tallied 15 in the first set.
The Camels led early in set two as Jessica Stocking got the first point on a kill. A few Coastal errors gave the Camels a 4-2 lead. The game tied up at seven points each on an error by Layden and the Chanticleers gained momentum off a kill by Annayka Legros to put them up two points. The Camels tied the set at 13 all on an attacking error by Leah Hardeman but could not find a consistent rhythm. Coastal took the second set 25-17 and led the match two sets to none over Campbell. The Camels recorded 10 kills and two aces in set two.
In set three the Camels started off with the lead scoring on a couple of kills and several CCU errors. The set went back and forth as it was tied five times before the Chanticleers gained the lead on a few Campbell errors. Coastal maintained a two/three point lead until McKenzie Fell knocked down a kill and Layden served up an ace to tie the score at 21 all forcing the Chanticleers to call a timeout. The teams would trade points and tie the set at 22 all, but the Camels fell 23-25 in the end. Harty recorded her four final kills of the match in the third set while Stocking added three and four other Camels had two for a team total of 15 kills.
Hardeman led the Chanticleers with 13 kills while Sara Boothe dished out 19 assists. Carla Cahill led the Coastal defense with 11 digs and Natasa Savovic recorded two solo blocks.
The Camels return to action Friday, Oct. 9, as they face Liberty at 7 p.m. at Gore Arena. Campbell returns home for the first time since Sept. 5 when they hosted the Hampton Inn and Suites of Holly Springs Invitational.
