Boiling Springs, N.C. – The Campbell Camels defeated (25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 27-25) the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb in four sets in Friday night Big South action. The Camels move to 10-13 on the season and 4-5 in the Big South as they head into tomorrow's game against the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville.
Jenny Tait and Katelyn Layden led the attack for the Camels with 14 kills each. Rebecca Ramirez extended her stretch of 20-plus assists to four games with her 28 assists on the night. Mary Crema collected 23 digs on the night while Summer Schuitema contributed 19 more as the Orange and Black finished with 82 digs. Layden added 13 digs of her own for her second straight double-double.
Campbell gained the lead (12-11) on a kill by Tait putting the momentum in the Camels direction. The Orange and Black went on a 10-3 run going up by seven (21-14) over the Runnin' Bulldogs. Gardner-Webb came within one point (21-20) but errors from GWU and a Layden ace gave the Camels a first set win 25-21. Layden led the Camels with four kills and Ramirez put up six assists. Schuitema and Kayla Schanback each recorded four digs.
Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early 12-2 lead in the second set over the Camels. Campbell went on a 13-7 run coming within five of the home team (15-20). Tait's serving helped the Camels to draw within one point (21-20) of the Runnin' Bulldogs, but three kills, an ace and a Campbell error sealed the second set as Gardner-Webb won 25-21, tying the match at one set each.
After a long rally, Campbell gained a 13-12 lead over the Runnin' Bulldogs, giving the Orange and Black some momentum. Neither team gained the upper hand until McKenzie Fell and Rachel Harty joined for a block. A GWU error and an ace by Layden gave the Camels a 21-16 lead as the Runnin' Bulldogs called their second timeout. The Runnin' Bulldogs would score one more point, but the Camels carried the momentum through the game-winning 25-17 on an ace by Mary Crema.
Jessica Stocking started the fourth set off with her sixth kill of the match. The Camels got out to an early lead as they headed into the first timeout 6-2 over the Runnin' Bulldogs. Campbell extended the lead to six points, but Gardner-Webb dug in and rallied back to come within one point of the visitors (13-12).
The Camels held a 21-19 lead coming out of a GWU timeout, but the Runnin' Bulldogs tied the game 21 all on a kill by Sydney Marshall. The two teams traded points tying the game four times before Jenny Tait knocked down a kill to give the Camels the set and match point (26-25). Campbell won the set 27-25 and the match 3-1 on an error by Taylor Lillard.
