Asheville, N.C. – The Camels fall against the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville in four sets (23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 16-25). Campbell moves to 10-14 and 4-6 on the season heading into next week's road trip to Virginia when the team plays Radford and Liberty on Nov. 6-7, to wrap up the away schedule.
McKenzie Fell led the Orange and Black with 12 kills while Katelyn Layden earned her third straight double-double recording 10 kills and 10 digs. Mary Crema controlled the defense with 23 digs on a day that saw four Camels collect 10 or more digs. Rebecca Ramirez dished out 29 of Campbell's 51 assists to extend her 20-plus assist streak to five games as she now has 507 on the season.
UNC Asheville got out to a small led going up by five points (10-5) over Campbell. The Camels came back to tie the game at 15 all on a kill by Jenny Tait. The Orange and Black led by two (18-16) after an ace by Tait as the Bulldogs called a timeout. Both teams traded the lead until Catherine Fisher knocked down two back-to-back kills to give UNC Asheville the 25-23 set one win.
The second set remained close as the teams tied the game 12 times and swapped the lead four times in a back and forth set. Neither team gained the upper hand until the end when the Camels won 25-23 on a block by Madison Linxwiler and Tait. Fell, Tait, Layden, and Rachel Harty all recorded three kills to total the Camels 12 kills in the set. Tait led the attack defense with four blocks and Linxwiler added three more.
The teams kept the game close early on but the Bulldogs opened up a small lead on a Bryn Pfeiffer ace (8-6). The Camels went on a 9-4 run coming within two points (18-20) on an ace by Crema but could not catch the home team as they fell 25-21 to the Bulldogs. Amelia Armstrong led with four kills for Campbell while Harty and Linxwiler each contributed three. Crema collected nine of her 23 digs during the third set.
UNC Asheville jumped out to early 7-1 lead over the Camels in the fourth set. Campbell scored on three back-to-back kills to come within five points of UNC Asheville (8-13). The momentum of the match turned in favor of the Bulldogs as they opened up a 12 point lead (10-22) over the Camels spurred by kills from Fisher and Christine Lakatos. Campbell went on a small 4-0 run but could not close the gap as they fell to UNC Asheville 25-16 in the fourth set and the match three sets to one.
