ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Campbell and Winthrop combined to score three early goals within one minute of play and the Eagles came away with a 4-1 victory over the Camels on Saturday afternoon. Matt Martinez score his first goal of the season for CU (7-8, 3-4 BSC), its first loss in its last four Big South matches.
Winthrop (8-6-1, 6-1-1) opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a header goal by Jordan Stoddard off a corner kick by Patrick Barnes. Just 30 seconds later, the Camels answered with an almost identical goal off a corner from Josh Signey that Martinez headed into the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
In the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles quickly worked the ball toward the Camel goal. Stoddard sent a cross from the end line that found the head of Max Hasenstab, who pushed it past camel goalkeeper Jeff Kenndey (1-1).
Jordi Lluch registered two second half goals for Winthrop. He scored off a header from a corner kick to give Winthrop a 3-1 advantage in the 48th minute. In the 78th minute, Lluch fired a rocket from just inside the 18 past Kennedy for the match's final score.
Bradley Farias had a chance to cut into the deficit in the 55th minute when he chased down a loose ball in the box and tried to chip it over the head of Winthrop keeper Fabian Broich, but he skied to make the save. Isaiah Page fired a shot from 25 yards out that was bending towards the upper right corner of the goal in the 72nd minute. However, Broich dived to punch the ball away from danger.
Broich (8-2-1) recorded six saves in the winning effort while Kennedy made four stops. Farias led the Camels with six shots with three coming on frame. Page had a pair of shots on goal.
Campbell will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Liberty in the final regular season match at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 PM and prior to the match the Camels will honor their three seniors Reafe Anderson, Ricki Gaez and Page.
