BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Avery Locklear came off the bench to score 16 points and UNC Pembroke upset Campbell 67-62 Friday night in the women's basketball season opener for both teams at Gore Arena.
The Division II Braves (1-0), who outscored Campbell 25-10 in the third quarter, led 46-33 after Locklear made back-to-back treys late in the period.
RaeChaun Edwards canned a triple to cap a 12-2 burst and bring the Lady Camels within 56-55 with 3:51 to play. However, Mary Robinson answered with a three on the next possession and the Camels drew no closer.
Locklear hit 5-of-9 from the floor, 2-of-4 threes, and 4-of-5 from the stripe in 17 minutes. Jasmine Huntley and LaShona Pritchard added 10 points each for the Braves, who made 9-of-19 from 3-point range. Robinson finished with 11 rebounds.
Amanda Coffer and Edwards were the lone Campbell players in double digits with 18 points each. Krystal Mangum and Caroline Bowns added nine each for the Camels, who made only 8-of-19 (.421) from the free throw line. Coffer pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Campbell (0-1) led 26-21 at halftime as UNCP hit just 7-of-27 shots in the opening period. However, the Braves made 9-of-19 in the third period, while Campbell hit just 3-of-17 from the floor and led 46-36 after three quarters.
On the night, Campbell shot 33 percent (23-69) from the floor and made 8-of-23 (.348) threes. UNCP shot 36.7 percent (22-60) from the field, hit 9-of-19 (.474) beyond the arc and canned 14-of-22 from the line.
"I thought it was a game of scoring, and UNC Pembroke really came out playing the game with intensity," said Campbell head coach Wanda Watkins. "I really try to be a positive person, but at times I thought we had some offensive struggles and were sometimes nonexistent. (UNCP is) a really good team where they go after it all of the time."
Campbell returns to action Monday at NC Central in a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
