BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Camels win in straight sets (25-19, 25-15, 25-23) over the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern on Senior Day, Nov. 14. Katelyn Layden led the attack with 10 kills and seven digs while Mary Crema led the defense with 19 digs on the day. Campbell improves to 12-16 overall, 6-8 Big South, and Charleston Southern falls to 10-22, 4-10 BSC.

"I am very proud of our team as a whole," said head coach Greg Goral. "I think we came out with a good focus and determination to get a win four our two seniors. Overall, I think we played more of a complete match than we have in a while and am very proud of our seniors and how they lead our group. Hopefully, we are peaking at the right time for the conference tournament."

"CSU is very scrappy and they work extremely hard. Even though we got a lead early in game one, they battled back and really pushed us to execute at a higher level. I called timeout halfway through that game down three because I knew that CSU wasn't going to give it to us. Our team executed a little bit better and played better defensively and executed in transition and that was the difference there."

The Camels took the lead on a kill by Jenny Tait and scored on three consecutive service aces from Summer Schuitema to jump up 7-3 over the Buccaneers early in the first set. CSU tied the game at eight on an ace by Addison Kaderli and the teams traded points. The Bucs took the 14-13 lead on a kill by Meredith Parrott and went up four points over the Camels (18-14) on an attack error by Rachel Harty. Campbell battled back to tie the game on a kill by Layden as they went on a 6-0 run to win the set 25-19.

Set two was a point-for-point battle as the teams traded the lead twice before the Camels gained a one-point lead (9-8) on a kill by McKenzie Fell. Campbell took off after gaining control of the lead and went on a 16-7 run to close out the second set 25-15 and go up 2-0 in the match. Tait led the Camels with three kills while Layden, Fell, Harty and Jessica Stocking each tallied two. Crema tallied seven digs and Kayla Schanback added six more as the Camels recorded 22 for the set.

CSU got out to a 5-2 lead over Campbell to start the third set. The Camels came back to tie the game at five and proceeded to trade points with the Buccaneers until Rebecca Ramirez served up back-to-back aces for a one-point lead (12-11). Campbell went on a  9-4 run going up by eight points, but a kill by Kaderli spurred a late run for Charleston Southern. The Bucs scored eight points to pull within one (24-23) but a final kill by Fell gave the Camels the 25-23 set and match point.

Campbell will play on Thursday in the first round of the Big South tournament hosted by High Point with the time and opponent to be announced.
