DURHAM, N.C. --- Summer Price scored 15 points and Amanda Coffer registered a double-double to lead Campbell to a 57-48 victory at N.C. Central on Monday night. With the win, the Lady Camels move to 1-1 on the young season.
Price's 15 points was a game-high while Coffer registered 10 points and 10 rebounds for her second-straight double-double to begin the season. RaeChaun Edwards scored nine points on 4-of-11 shooting with six rebounds. Jessica Pone chipped-in seven points off the bench while MaKala Rouse added a career-high seven boards.
N.C. Central (0-1) opened the game with a 14-2 lead and held an 18-14 advantage after the first period. After finishing the first on a 5-0 run with the help of a Price three, CU tied the game at 22-22 after an Edwards steal that turned into a fastbreak layup.
A few plays later, Caroline Bowns nailed a three-pointer to give Campbell its first lead of the game at 27-24. Brianna Cribb added a free throw and the Lady Camels' defense held the Eagles scoreless for the final 3:54 of the first half as CU took a 28-24 lead into the halftime locker room.
Qua Brown and Price opened the third period with back-to-back layups to push CU's advantage to 32-28 with 6:33 to play in the third. Central didn't score its first points of the second half until the 4:36 mark of the third and Campbell scored the final four points of the stanza to take a 38-29 lead to the fourth. CU doubled-up NCCU 10-5 in the third.
The Lady Camels took their first double-digit lead of the game on a Coffer layup that make the score 40-29 with 8:51 to play. CU used an 8-0 spurt to take its largest lead of the contest at 50-33 with three minutes to play. The Eagles cut the deficit to nine with 30 seconds to play, but Campbell hit free throws down the stretch to ice away the victory.
Campbell held a narrow 44-43 rebounding advantage and held Central to 1-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc. Jewel Yarborough made her season debut in the fourth quarter while Cribb and Alyshia Allison made their first career appearances for the orange and black.
Tisha Dixon led the Eagles with 14 points with a team-high nine rebounds. Morgan Jones added eight points and with five rebounds. Dominique Adams also pulled down five boards.
Campbell will be back in action on Wednesday when it plays host to N.C. A&T in the annual Education Day game. Tipoff from Gore Arena is set for 11:45 a.m.
