Lady Camels hold off late rally in 62-53 victory over Mount St. Mary's

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Campbell held off a late rally by the Mount. St. Mary's Mountaineers and claimed a 62-53 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena. RaeChaun Edwards led the Lady Camels with 21 points.

Campbell moves to 3-1 on the young season with its third-straight victory while the Mount falls to 1-2. Edwards led all scorers with her season-high effort with a season-high seven assists. Amanda Coffer registered her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds while matching a career-high five blocks. Summer Price tallied 10 points with five rebounds and four assists.

CU earned its largest lead of the game at 51-37 with 8:57 to play. However, the Mount scored the next 10 points over the next six minutes to cut the deficit to 55-51 with 2:51 remaining. A Price layup ended the run, but Alexis Carter answered with a jumper to make the score 57-53 with 1:49 on the clock.

Jody Chickey stole the ball away in the next possession and took it the other way, but Jessica Harris' layup was missed in transition with Brianna Cribb pulling down a key rebound. After a pair of free throws by Edwards pushed the CU lead back to six, Coffer tallied her fifth block on the other end. Caroline Bowns iced the game away with a three ball with 20 seconds to go as CU claimed the nine-point victory.

Carter led Mount St. Mary's with 16 points while Jessica Harris added 11. Kaitlyn Eisenhard had a team-high eight rebounds while Chickley had seven points and five assists.

CU led the game wire-to-wire and a Coffer three-pointer gave the Lady Camels an 18-7 lead with 20 seconds to go in the first period. After taking an 18-9 lead at the first break, a Harris three cut the deficit to 31-26 with 3:42 remaining in the second period.

Price nailed a three ball with 1:47 to go in the first half to push the lead back to double digits at 46-36. Jayla Leftwich hit two free throws for the Mount in the final minute but CU took a 36-38 lead to the half.

In the third, the Mountaineers used a 4-0 spurt to cut the CU lead to 44-36 with 3:16 on the clock. However, a three-pointer by Krystal Mangum and a layup by Jessica Pone sent the Camels to the fourth with a 49-36 advantage.

Tiffany Daniel scored a career-high eight points for CU while Bowns finished with five points off the bench. The Lady Camels shot 41 percent from the field (24-for-58) compared to 31 percent (20-for-63) for Mount St. Mary's. Campbell was 7-for-15 from beyond the arc (46.7%).

Campbell will head to Richmond, Virginia on Tuesday to take on Virginia Commonwealth University in its final game before the Thanksgiving holiday. Tipoff from the Siegel Center is set for 7 p.m.
