RICHMOND, Va. --- The Campbell University women's basketball team was dealt a 57-34 loss by VCU on Thursday night at the Siegel Center. Jessica Pone led the Lady Camels (3-2) with a season-high eight points off the bench.
Summer Price finished with five points while Tiffany Daniel had six. Daniel and MaKala Rouse each pulled down a career-high seven rebounds to lead CU on the boards. Campbell's two leading scorers, RaeChaun Edwards and Amanda Coffer, were held to just five points combined.
A Price layup put CU on the board first 43 seconds in, but both sides struggled to score early as the first media timeout was taken six minutes in with the score at 2-2. Qua Brown gave the Lady Camels a 3-2 lead with a free throw, but a long scoreless drought ensued.
VCU (3-1) took its first lead of the game at 4-3 with 4:24 to play in the opening period and scored the next 12 points to take a 16-3 advantage with 5:15 remaining in the first half. A layup by Daniel broke up the long run, however the Rams closed out the half on a 7-3 spurt to take a 23-8 lead into the break.
VCU held a 16 point advantage midway through the third before back-to-back threes by Pone and Edwards cut the lead to 10 at 28-18 with 4:23 on the clock. CU matched VCU's 17 points in the third but the Rams took a 40-25 lead into the fourth period.
It was all VCU in the fourth as a layup by Camile Calhoun pushed the lead to 19 at 48-29 with 5:27 to play. CU was only able to get the deficit back to 16 after layups by Rouse and Brianna Cribb before VCU sealed the 23-point victory.
Four players finished in double-figures for the Rams led by Adeaze Aleaze's 12 points. Camille Calhoun tallied 11 points and seven rebounds while Isis Thorpe and Jessica Ogunnorin each scored 10.
Following the Thanksgiving holiday, Campbell will open Big South Conference play Tuesday, Dec. 1 on the road at Coastal Carolina. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
