RADFORD, Va. – Campbell volleyball fell in five sets (25-16, 24-26, 25-23, 19-25, 14-16) to Radford in Big South action Friday night. Three Camels collected double-digit kills led by freshman Rachel Harty (14) as the team moves to 10-15 on the season, 4-7 Big South. The Orange and Black head to Liberty tomorrow for a 2 p.m. matinee as they conclude their regular season road games.
"We played extremely well the majority of the match," said head coach Greg Goral. "I am so proud of how our team fought hard throughout. We responded well to everything Radford did offensively and defensively. It was one or two points either way that made the difference. I look forward to seeing how the team performs tomorrow."
Harty led the attack with 14 kills while Jenny Tait and Katelyn Layden both contributed 12 apiece. Rebecca Ramirez and Summer Schuitema combined for 50 assists setting up 27 and 23 respectively. Mary Crema paced the defensive side of the ball with 28 digs. McKenzie Fell stopped the ball a total six times with one solo and five assisted blocks.
The Camels started the first set jumping out to a 10-3 early lead that they would never relinquish. Campbell led by as much as seven points during the match on the way to a first set win 25-16. Tait led the Camels with three of 10 kills while Fell, Harty, and Jessica Stocking each contributed two. Crema tallied six digs and Layden added three more and a service ace for the Camels.
Campbell gained the early lead in set two going up 6-3, but Radford crept back up to tie the game and take the lead on a Campbell attack error. The Camels regained the lead on an attack error by Megan Short while two aces by Tait and a kill by Fell gave the visitors a bit of a cushion. Radford came back to tie the game and again take control going up 20-16. The Orange and Black collected themselves during a timeout and came back to tie the game at 24 all on a Ramirez ace. Two kills from the Highlanders put the score at 26-24 as the home team tied the match at one set each.
After the intermission, the teams battled for control of the third set that saw 15 ties and six lead changes. Radford had the early lead (6-4) but Campbell tied the game on a kill by Madison Linxwiler. Neither team gained more than a two-point lead as both squads went point-for-point. Campbell tied the game at 23 all on a kill by Layden and two consecutive kills by Fell and Layden gave the Camels the 25-23 set three win. Layden recorded four kills while Harty and Fell each added three of their own.
Both teams traded points to start the fourth set, but Radford gained the lead on a kill by Maddie Palmer and never looked back. The Camels came within one point (15-14) but could not catch the Highlanders who went on a 10-5 run to win the set 25-19 and tie the match at two sets each and forced a fifth deciding set. Tait, Harty, and Layden all recorded three kills and Crema and Layden combined for nine digs.
The fifth set went back and forth with one going up to have the other even out the score and take the lead. The Camels gained a two point lead a few times to try and swing momentum in their direction, but the Highlanders did not back down and came back to win the set 16-14 on a kill by Savanna Burton. Layden and Harty each had three kills and Crema and Kayla Schanback both collected three digs as the Camels fell in five set.
