JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- Campbell dropped the first game of the North Florida Hampton Inn Oceanfront Holiday Classic to Central Arkansas by a 57-34 score on Saturday afternoon. Jessica Pone led the Lady Camels (5-4) with nine points.
Amanda Coffer tallied six points while Qua Brown added five points off the bench. Summer Price finished with four points and pulled down a team-high three rebounds. Coffer, Brown and MaKala Rouse also matched Price's three boards.
Maggie Proffitt scored a game-high 11 points for Central Arkansas (8-1) with the help of three three-pointers. Kendra Watts tallied eight points while Raquel Logan had nine rebounds and seven points.
The Sugar Bears, who entered the game as the eighth-best scoring defense in the NCAA, held the Lady Camels to just eight points in the second half. UCA forced CU into a nearly 10 minute scoring drought between the third and fourth periods while scoring 14-straight points. The Sugar Bears scored 14 of the fourth period's 18 points en route to the victory.
It was a hotly contested opening period that featured four ties and three lead changes while neither side led by more than four points. A layup by Price gave CU a 9-5 lead with 5:28 to play in the first period.
Later in the first, a layup by Brown tied the game at 11-11 with just over a minute to play in the opening frame. However, Watts hit a layup with 40 seconds to go to give the Sugar Bears a 13-11 lead after one period.
Proffit hit three-straight three pointers to give UCA a 24-18 advantage midway through the second period. After Baudoin Taylor hit a layup to push the Sugar Bear lead to 11 with 1:31 to play in the first half, the Lady Camels ended the second period on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 31-26 at the break. A running layup by Pone ended the opening half.
Campbell will play the final game of the tournament, and its final game before the Christmas break, tomorrow against North Florida at 3 p.m.
