BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Will Saunders and Saah Nimley combined for 51 points to lead Charleston Southern to an 86-57 win over Campbell Saturday at Gore Arena.
The Bucs (18-9, 12-4 Big South) wrapped a 21-0 run around half-time to break open and close game and earn their fifth-straight win and stay on top of the Big South standings. Campbell (9-20, 3-13) dropped its fifth in a row after shooting just 34.5 percent on the day.
Fifth-year senior Andrew Ryan was the lone Camel to hit double figures with 12 points. He became the 26th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points when he made the second of three foul shots with 12:23 left in the opening half. Ryan has played in a school-record 126 games and stands 14th on the school's Division I era (since '77-78) scoring list with 1007 points.
Saunders scored a career-high 26 points, hitting 6-of-8 threes on the day. Nimley, who leads the league in scoring at better than 20 points per game, added 25, including 4-of-8 triples and 7-of-8 from the line. Arlon Harper chipped in 14 points for CSU, which shot 50 percent on the day and made 11-of-20 threes.
Leading by seven at the break (39-32), Charleston Southern hit 58 percent of its attempts in the final period and led by as many as 35 down the stretch. Campbell endured a scoreless stretch of 8:30 while CSU opened up its double-digit lead. Charleston Southern finished the game with a 24-0 edge in points off turnovers.
After Ryan knocked down a three with 3:37 to go in the opening half, the Bucs ended the stanza on a 9-0 run, capped by Nimley's 25-footer just before the buzzer. Saunders' trey from the left wing capped the 21-0 CSU burst and left the visitors in front 51-32 with 15:52 to play.
Curtis Phillips, D.J. Mason and Troy Harper chipped in nine points apiece for the Camels, who made 10-of-28 threes.
The Camels host Winthrop Thursday in the final home contest for Ryan and fellow fifth-year senior Reco McCarter.
