RADFORD, Va. - Campbell was held to just three points in the opening 10 minutes as Radford (16-11, 13-5 BSC) opened a double-digit lead, and the Lady Camels (17-10, 12-6 BSC) were able to close the gap to single digits just once in the second half in a 67-43 setback inside the Dedmon Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Highlanders held Campbell to only 29.6 percent shooting (16-of-54) on the afternoon and forced 25 turnovers by the Lady Camels, converting those into 28 points.
Senior Kiera Gaines led Campbell with 12 points and also added eight rebounds and five steals on the afternoon. Fellow senior Summer Leverette had a game-high nine rebounds, and freshman Summer Price hauled down a career-high eight boards.
Radford knocked down 24 of its 52 (46.2 percent) attempts from the field, including six three-pointers. Jordynn Gaymon led all scorers with 13 points and was joined in double figures by Ayana Avery (12) and Aisha Foy (10).
Campbell fell into an early hole as Radford took control from the opening tip, going on a 15-3 run over the first 10:05 of the game to build an early 12-point lead. Kiera McIvor and Rachael Ross keyed the early burst with four points apiece before senior Juli Osborne knocked down a jumper to cut the lead back down to 10.
The Lady Camels closed the gap to single digits four times over the remainder of the first frame, getting as close as seven points, 22-15, after a fastbreak layup by Gaines at the 5:17 mark; Radford, however, responded with five unanswered points to rebuild its double-digit advantage.
Just before halftime, Gaines drew contact under the basket and knocked down a pair of free throws with under one second to play, sending Campbell into the locker room down just nine, 32-23.
Coming out of the break, the two sides traded three-pointers from Avery and Price, but Radford gradually built its lead to 19 following two free throws by Foy that made it 50-31 with 12 minutes remaining.
Trailing 50-33, Campbell went through a five-minute scoring drought and Radford pieced together a 10-0 run to put the contest out of reach. Buoyed by five points from Gaymon and four from Janayla White, the Highlanders emerged with a 60-33 lead with 6:41 left in the game.
Five late points by the Lady Camels over the final two minutes cut the lead to 24, but Campbell could not close the gap any further.
The Lady Camels will return to action for a televised contest against Coastal Carolina inside Gore Arena on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The game will be carried on the American Sports Network (ASN) and simulcast on the Big South Network.
