Camels split a pair of games in day two of Citrus Classic

Orlando, Fla. - On the final day of the Citrus Classic, the Camels defeated the ACC's University of Virginia with a score of 5-2 during the first game of the day, but dropped its second contest against Jacksonville State, 8-1.

Against Virginia, it was a quiet game until the fifth inning, when the Cavaliers committed some costly errors to put the Camels on top. After Camise Patterson reached base on an error from the Cavaliers third baseman, Brittany Bruce was then able to reach base on a throwing error from the pitcher.

Following Virginia's errors, the Camel's bats were able to drive in some runs off of hits by senior Ericka Nesbitt, Stephanie Jones, and Kerstine Womack, the senior from Broadway, N.C. The three-hit inning ended up leading to five runs, and the Camels were able to get by with only allowing the Cavaliers to score two more runs after Virginia's Kaitilin Fitzgerald hit a double to score Lauren Heintzelman during the sixth inning. The Cavaliers scored one more during the seventh inning stretch.

Inside the circle, Katie Baker earned the win while Virginia's Andie Formby took the loss for the Cavaliers. The Camels will play its final game on Sunday against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks for a second time.

However, during the second game of the day the Camels found themselves unable to bounce back from Jacksonville State's eight runs, and suffered its third and final loss for the weekend.

It would be the Gamecock's freshman, Peyton Barthel, who came in to pinch hit for the squad during the fourth inning that led to a three-run home run to secure a safe lead for the team that pushed the Gamecocks ahead 6-0.

Junior Courtney Roberts took the loss for Campbell, giving up six runs on eight hits through four innings. Senior Julia Callicutt came in with an opportunity to try to earn a save, but gave up two more runs after walking one in and hitting another with a pitch.

The Camels will travel to Jacksonville State this coming weekend for the Dolphin Invitational.
