BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Maggie Christopher's first career home run – a seventh-inning walk-off – lifted Campbell to a doubleheader sweep Sunday of East Tennessee State to conclude the Hampton Inn Invitational.
Campbell (2-1) trailed 4-2 with two out in the seventh inning before Tori Griffin beat out an infield hit and Camise Patterson reached on an error. On the first pitch she saw from Taylor Carter (0-2), Christopher, a senior from Awendaw, S.C., homered over the left center field fence to give Campbell a 5-4 victory.
The Camels blanked the Bucs (0-4) 10-0 in the opener behind Katie Baker's four-hit shutout and long balls from Chandler Patterson and Stephanie Jones.
Chandler Patterson, a freshman from Sanford, N.C., provided all the runs Campbell needed in the opening game with a three-run shot to right center field in the bottom of the first off Madison Ogle (0-1).
Katie Baker, Camise Patterson and Christopher all doubled to highlight a five-run fifth for Campbell, which had eight hits off two ETSU pitchers.
Jones followed Ericka Nesbitt's single in the fifth with a two-run blast to close out the scoring. Nesbitt finished the opener 3-for-3 at the plate and stole a base.
Baker (1-0) recorded a one-two-three fifth to end the run-rule shortened game. The sophomore right-hander struck out seven and scattered four hits with no walks to earn her first victory of the season.
Ogle surrendered eight runs, six earned, on six hits in two and two-third innings to suffer the loss.
In the nightcap, Mykeah Johnson led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run to break a 2-2 tie and put ETSU in front. With one out, Carter doubled to center and later scored on Nicole Fox's single.
In the bottom of the frame, Carter retired Jones and Chandler Patterson on ground outs before Griffin started the winning rally.
Baker (2-0) earned the win in relief of Julia Callicutt, who struck out a career-high 11 batters over six and two-third innings. Carter worked one and two-third innings in relief for ETSU, allowing three unearned runs and two hits.
ETSU took an early lead with two unearned runs in the second before Brittany Bruce brought the Camels within 2-1 with her first homer of the year. The Camels tied the score in the fifth when Jones doubled with two out and scored on Chandler Patterson's double.
Campbell returns to action Friday against Tennessee Tech in a 2:00 p.m. start at the Georgia Southern Invitational.
