Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Junior Loren Day notched a game-high five goals and finished with eight points as Campbell rallied from a one-goal halftime deficit to defeat Mercer 14-13 on Tuesday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Campbell (2-5) trailed the Bears (2-2) by an 8-7 scoreline at the halftime break, but goals from five different Camels in the second half sparked the second-half rally past Mercer.
Day led all scorers with five goals, and a quartet of Camels; Rebecca Sheinfeld, Carter Koontz, Erica Hitch and Hayley Carroll; each notched two goals apiece for Campbell. Day also led the squad with a trio of assists and tied with Mackenzie Koeller for the team lead in draw controls with four.
Between the pipes, Merredith Bechler played all 60 minutes and made six saves for the Camels to pick up her second win of the season.
For Mercer, Lindsey Zeltwanger and Hannah Bair each recorded a hat trick with three goals to lead the side in scoring, and Zeltwanger and Kate Leone tallied a pair of assists each.
Haleigh Wurzel played the full game in goal for the Bears, tallying 13 saves in the loss.
Campbell took control of the contest over the opening 15 minutes, outscoring the Bears 5-1 over that span to grab the early advantage. Day fired a hat trick just 9:25 into the game, and Carroll and Sheinfeld added the other early goals for the Camels.
Sparked by two goals from Bair, however, Mercer scored four unanswered goals to knot the game at 5-5 with 6:18 to play in the first half. After Day's fourth tally briefly regained the lead for Campbell, the Bears grabbed their first lead of the game on an Audrey Allen strike at the 2:05 mark for a 7-6 advantage.
Both sides traded one goal apiece over the final two minutes, and Campbell entered the locker room trailing by a single goal, 8-7.
Scores by Hitch and Koeller to open the second half put the Camels back on top by a slim 9-8 score, but Mercer countered with a pair of quick goals to regain a 10-9 advantage as the two squads traded leads early in the second frame.
Mercer emerged with a 12-10 lead at the 21:51 mark, but a Hitch strike with an assist from Day with 18:05 to play spurred a late Campbell run of four consecutive goals. Day tallied what would become the game-winner with 12:16 to play, and Koontz fired the final goal of the day for the Camels with 9:48 left to take a 14-12 lead.
Erica Coyne pulled one back for the Bears with 6:17 to play, but Campbell held them off down the stretch for the victory.
Campbell will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. as LIU-Brooklyn makes the trip to Barker-Lane Stadium. The meeting will be the first between the two sides on the lacrosse field and will be followed by a free clinic for ages 5-12 hosted by Head Coach Dawn Easley and the Camels.
