HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA. – Craig Hornberger is two strokes off the individual lead and Campbell is tied for seventh after 36 holes Saturday of the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular.
No.-34 Virginia Tech (291-286—577) owns a seven stroke lead over East Carolina (297-288—585) heading into Sunday's final round. No.-44 NC State and VCU are tied for third at 597 strokes. Campbell is tied with Grand Canyon at 605 strokes.
Hornberger made 10 birdies on Saturday, third-best in the 104-player field, and is tied for third at two-under 142 (70-72). A junior from Lancaster, Pa., Hornberger made six birdies in the opening round and led after 18 holes. He is tied for first in par-five scoring (-5) and tied for fifth on the par-four layouts (+1) on the par-72, 6884-yard El Campeon course.
Only four players finished the first two rounds in red numbers on the leader board. George Kilgore of East Carolina (71-69—140) owns a one-stroke lead over Austin Powell of Penn (72-69—141). Hornberger is tied with Scott Vincent of Virginia Tech (73-69—142) for third.
Campbell sophomore Gaston Bertinotti followed an opening round 80 with an even-par 72. He played the par-four holes Saturday at one-under, tied for fourth in the event.
Freshman Thomas La Morte (75-79—154) is tied for 39th, while fellow frosh Jeremy Nevius (78-81—159) is tied for 67th. Junior Mikko Lehtovuori is 87th (85-79—164).
