RADFORD, VA. – Radford rallied for a 5-2 win over visiting Campbell in the Big South Conference opener for both teams Saturday at the Radford Softball Stadium.
Taylor Asimakoupoulos (1-0) scattered four hits over six and 2/3 innings of shutout relief to earn the victory for the Highlanders (5-11, 1-0). Katie Baker (7-6) allowed five runs, two earned, on five hits over three and 2/3 frames to suffer the loss.
Campbell (13-10, 0-1) scored twice in the first inning without a hit after Radford starter Kelsey Weddle loaded the bases with a walk and two hit batters. Melissa Tullar and Brittany Bruce followed with walks to put the Camels in front 2-0.
Radford answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the second. A pair of Campbell errors, plus a two-run single by Megan Honaker keyed the frame.
The Highlanders added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth on Casey Burns' two-run double.
Ericka Nesbitt had a pair of hits and extended her hitting streak to nine games. The senior shortstop has batted safely in 21 of Campbell's 23 games this season.
The teams will conclude the three-game series Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
