WILMINGTON, N.C. – Campbell smacked 25 hits to sweep a softball doubleheader from host UNC Wilmington Tuesday at Bozeman Field. The Camels had 13 hits in an 8-3 victory in the opener. Katie Baker then tossed a two-hitter in a 6-1 win in the nightcap.
After four scoreless innings in game one, Campbell tallied three unearned runs in the fifth. Kerstine Womack's RBI double broke up the shutout and Melissa Tullar added a two-out, two-run single.
In the Camel sixth, Chandler Patterson drove in two with a bases-loaded single and Womack scored Ericka Nesbitt from third with an RBI fielder's choice.
UNCW (11-8) scored three runs – two unearned – in the bottom of the frame on four hits. However, the Camels answered in the top of the seventh with Patterson's double and RBI hits from Brittany Bruce and Bailey Bjorson.
Twelve of Campbell's 13 hits in the opener were singles. Stephanie Jones, Nesbitt, Patterson, Tullar and Bruce all had two hits.
Camel starter Julia Callicutt (7-2) won her fourth-straight decision by scattering six hits and striking out eight in a complete-game effort. UNCW's Casey Rowland (4-4) fanned 10 batters over seven innings, but surrendered eight runs (five earned) on 13 hits and four walks.
Campbell scored in the first two innings of the nightcap to back Baker's pitching effort. The sophomore right-hander allowed only a third inning infield hit to Jessica Rappe and Sarah Davis' sixth-inning single, while fanning seven.
Baker (8-7) aided her pitching effort with a run-scoring hit in the first and an RBI groundout in the fourth. Nesbitt finished 3-of-4 with a pair of doubles to extend her hitting streak to 11 games. Chandler Patterson and Brittany Bruce both doubled and singled for CU.
Davis (4-3) took the game two loss for UNCW by giving up 11 hits and six runs in four innings. The Seahawks dropped to 0-5 this season against Big South Conference schools after losing consecutive twin bill sweeps to CU and Presbyterian.
CU returns to Big South Conference play Saturday in a doubleheader at Coastal Carolina (2:00 p.m.).
