BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell pitchers Katie Baker and Julia Callicutt combined on a two-hitter and the Camels defeated Liberty 3-2 Sunday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
Bailey Bjorson homered, while Brittany Bruce and Ericka Nesbitt delivered RBI doubles for the Camels (19-15, 2-6), who salvaged the third game of the Big South Conference series after dropping Saturday's doubleheader.
Baker and Callicutt retired the final 14 Liberty (15-16, 4-2) batters. The Flames scored an unearned run in the top of the first before Bjorson smashed her third homer of the season with one out in the second to knot the game at one.
In the third, Tori Zavodny reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and eventually scored on Kelby Allen's RBI fielder's choice to put the Flames back in front. However, Baker struck out Mickey Loveridge to end the threat and no Flame reached base the rest of the way.
Chandler Patterson walked to lead off the bottom of the frame; then Baker, who was inserted as a pinch-runner, stole second. Nesbitt doubled down the left field line to tie the game again.
With one out in the fourth, Bjorson walked and Bruce's two-bagger scored Tori Griffin with what proved to be the winning run.
Baker (10-9) allowed two runs, one earned, on two singles and three walks with seven strikeouts in a six-inning stint. Callicutt tossed a one-two-three seventh to earn her first save.
Liberty starter Chandler Ball (10-6), who had won her last seven decisions, suffered the loss after giving up three runs on four hits – all of which went for extra bases – with two walks and one strikeout over four innings.
Alexia Taylor had Liberty's lone two hits (both singles). Camise Patterson also doubled for the Camels.
Campbell continues its 13-game home stand Tuesday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Charleston Southern.
