Lacrosse falls 21-16 at Robert Morris in non-conference finale

Box Score

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Goals from Rebecca Sheinfeld and Erica Hitch with just over seven minutes remaining cut the Robert Morris lead to just three goals, 18-15, but Campbell fell just short in its comeback attempt in a 21-16 setback on Sunday afternoon.

The Camels (3-7) rallied from an early 11-3 deficit and were paced by four goals apiece from Hitch and Loren Day. Kayla Reilly also chipped in her third hat trick of the season and extended her multi-goal scoring streak to three games.

Day's four goals on Sunday bring her into a tie with current assistant coach Taelar Errington for the most in a single season in program history; Errington also tallied 36 goals during the 2014 campaign for the Camels. In addition to her goals, Day's 13 draw controls were a new career-high mark for the junior in the category.

Megan Reilly led the squad with four ground balls, while Hayley Carroll forced a pair of turnovers to lead Campbell on defense. In goal, Merredith Bechler made six saves in 56:45 between the posts.

Emma Baukhages and Corey Karwacki each tallied five goals for the Colonials (7-2) to lead the squad on the offensive end. Hallie Yancey and Mackenzie Duffy split time in goal, with Yancey earning the win while making four saves in 38:11 of action.

Robert Morris jumped out to an early lead after scoring five of the first six goals over the opening 15 minutes, all of which came off the sticks of Baukhages and Karwacki. Campbell ended the spurt with an unassisted strike from Kayla Reilly at the 9:55 mark to cut the Colonials' advantage to 5-2.

The Colonials used another 6-1 stretch over the next five and a half minutes to build an 11-3 lead over the Camels, but two goals from Day and another by Grace Boyce with just two ticks remaining on the clock gave Campbell momentum despite an 11-6 deficit heading into the halftime break.

After Hitch cut the lead to 11-7 just over two minutes into the second half, the two sides traded two goals apiece, with both of Campbell's tallies coming off free position attempts, over the next three and a half minutes.

Campbell would not allow Robert Morris to gain more than a five-goal lead until just 2:25 was left on the clock. After the Colonials gained a 17-12 advantage with 15:54 to play, Day fired a shorthanded goal to spark a 3-1 run that pulled the Camels with three, 18-15, with 7:06 remaining.

Robert Morris fended off the late Campbell rally with three straight goals before Annie Cook pulled one back for the Camels with 52 seconds left in the half.

The Camels will return to action next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as they open Big South play at Liberty. Campbell dropped its first meeting with the Flames 8-6 in 2013 before picking up an 18-14 victory last season in Buies Creek.
