Box Score FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore goalkeeper Merredith Bechler made a school-record 20 saves and freshman Mackenzie Koeller netted her first two career goals, but Campbell fell 16-8 against San Diego State on Friday evening.
Playing on the campus of Fresno State in a neutral-site clash, junior Loren Day turned in her fourth hat trick in six games this season to lead the Camels in scoring, but the team could not overcome an early three-goal deficit against the Aztecs.
Bechler's performance was her third this season with double-digit saves and established a new Campbell program record for stops in a single contest. On the year, the sophomore now has 55 saves in 366 minutes of action.
For San Diego State, Sophie Koubek had a game-high four goals while both Alex Watson and Felice Artuso tallied two apiece. Katrina Reeves and Katie Merritt each played 30 minutes between the posts, combining for three saves and eight allowed goals.
The Aztecs opened the game with three unanswered goals across the first four and a half minutes of action, getting goals from Koubek, Christina Ricciardulli and Vickie Porter to grab an early lead over the Camels.
Koeller responded in a big way, however, firing her first two collegiate goals just under nine minutes apart to pull Campbell back within one goal at the 14:00 mark.
San Diego State finished the first half on a 7-1 run in goals scored, but Day pulled one back for Campbell on an unassisted strike with just three seconds remaining on the clock as the Camels entered the locker room trailing by a 10-3 margin.
Day notched her second goal of the night with 28:30 left in the second half before the Aztecs grabbed a 15-4 lead with 19:04 to play.
Campbell staged a late rally over the final 12:29 of the contest, scoring four of the last five goals as Day, Erica Hitch, Grace Boyce and Hayley Carroll each found the back of the net during the run.
The Camels will return home to Barker-Lane Stadium for their next two contests, squaring off against Mercer on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. before facing LIU-Brooklyn next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
