Campbell falls 21-10 against Winthrop on Friday afternoon

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Erica HitchAnnie Cook and Kayla Reilly each found the back of the net twice, but Campbell dropped a 21-10 decision against Winthrop at Barker-Lane Stadium on Friday afternoon in Big South play.

In a game that featured the Big South's top three goalscorers, the Camels (3-10, 0-3) held Winthrop to seven first-half goals and rallied from an early 4-0 deficit before a 7-1 stretch by the Eagles (11-2, 3-0) gave them a 12-6 advantage.

Hayley Carroll and Loren Day scored one goal each for Campbell, while Erin O'Hara found the back of the net for the first time this season. Both Cook and Day also notched a pair of assists.

April Reinhart scooped up four ground balls for the Camels, while Hitch and Megan Reilly added a trio apiece. Reilly and O'Hara forced two Winthrop turnovers on defense as well.

In goal, Merredith Bechler played the full 60 minutes and made nine saves, also tallying a pair of ground balls for Campbell.

For the Eagles, Jenna Kasmarik, the nation's leading scorer, finished with a game-high nine goals, and Shannon Gallagher added a hat trick in the scoring column. Danielle Ellis tallied a game-high seven assists while Alyssa Blevins scooped up six ground balls.

Alaina Girani played the full 60 minutes between the posts for Winthrop, making 11 saves.

Campbell fell into an early hole after Winthrop netted four unanswered goals over the opening 10 minutes of the contest, but Kayla Reilly and Hitch halted the run with a pair of goals to cut the deficit to 4-2 with 11:39 to play.

Kasmarik scored just over a minute later for the Eagles, but three consecutive strikes for Campbell pulled the Camels level at 5-5 with 4:36 remaining in the half. Winthrop tallied the final two goals of the half as the Camels entered the locker room trailing 7-5.

Out of the halftime break, the two sides traded a pair of goals over the first two and a half minutes before Winthrop used four unanswered goals, including two more from Kasmarik, to take a 12-6 lead with 21:59 on the clock.

Campbell found the back of the net three times over the next eight minutes to keep pace with the Eagles, but another 6-0 streak for Winthrop pushed the deficit to 20-9 with just under two minutes to play. O'Hara scored off a free position attempt with 1:14 remaining, but Campbell could not cut the deficit any further.

Campbell will be back in action on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. as the Camels make the short in-state trip to square off against High Point.
