BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Katie Baker tossed a five-hit shutout to lift Campbell to a 5-0 win over Gardner-Webb Friday evening and a split of a Big South Conference softball doubleheader at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
In the opener, Rachel Cumisky hit a three-run homer and Gardner-Webb (12-28, 4-15) defeated the Camels (22-25, 4-15) 7-3. The teams conclude the series Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. start that will be aired live on ESPN3.
Baker (11-14) scattered five singles and worked around two walks while striking out eight to earn her third shutout of the season. The sophomore right-hander also drove in Campbell's first run on a single in the first inning.
Bailey Bjorson launched a two-run homer to left in the fourth to put CU in front 3-0.
After the first two Bulldogs reached in the fifth, Baker struck out Taylar Pridgen, Kellie Beres and Megan Gibbons to end the threat.
Lia Batchelor provide the Camels with a pair of insurance runs in the sixth with a two RBI pinch single.
Baker finished the nightcap 2-of-2 at the plate. Gardner-Webb's Ashley Wark (2-12) gave up five runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout.
In game one, Gardner-Webb built a 4-0 lead on the strength of Amanda Gomes' solo shot in the second and Cumisky's three-run homer in the fourth.
Campbell answered with Stephanie Jones' two-run round-tripper in the third. Ericka Nesbitt delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth to draw the Camels within one.
GWU extended the margin in the sixth with three unearned runs on two hits and three Campbell errors.
Cumisky and Jill Blank finished with a pair of hits in the opener for the Bulldogs. Jones and Nesbitt each had two hits for the Camels.
Summer Darnell (9-11) earned the win in game one, scattering seven hits and six walks with three strikeouts in a complete game effort. Julia Callicutt (10-8) suffered loss, allowed seven runs (three earned) on eight hits with no walks and six punch outs.
