Campbell tallies four hat tricks in 20-7 win over Presbyterian

Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Four Camels fired hat tricks, led by junior Loren Day's five goals, as Campbell earned its first Big South victory of the season with a 20-7 win over Presbyterian on Friday evening at Barker-Lane Stadium.

Erica Hitch found the back of the net four times for the Camels (4-11, 1-4), while both Rebecca Sheinfeld and Kayla Reilly each tallied three scores. Sheinfeld's hat trick was the second of her career, with both coming against Presbyterian; the Weston, Fla., native also scored three against the Blue Hose last season.

Annie Cook scooped up a game-high eight ground balls while also recording a goal and an assist; Kayla Reilly chipped in with a pair of helpers for the Camels as well.

Defensively, the trio of Day, Jillian Summers and Erin O'Hara each caused three turnovers, and Campbell's 19 forced turnovers as a team tied the best mark in a single game this season after the Camels also forced 19 against LIU-Brooklyn on March 14.

Merredith Bechler made nine saves while playing the full 60 minutes in net for Campbell, her second-fewest goals allowed in 2015.

For the Blue Hose (3-11, 0-5), Katy Richardson and Alexandra Cole each scored twice, and Cole added two assists on the evening. Taylor Johnson pulled down a game-high five draw controls, while goalkeeper Lee-Ann Salim tallied eight ground balls.

Maura Talvacchia, who ranks second in the nation in caused turnovers, forced eight giveaways for the Presbyterian defense. In goal, Salim took the loss in just over 41 minutes of action, allowing 17 goals while making eight saves.

The two sides traded a pair of goals early as the first five minutes of the game featured two lead changes. Ashley Wren put Presbyterian ahead with a strike just over a minute into play, but two quick goals by Day over the next two minutes gave the Camels a 2-1 advantage. Richardson, the Blue Hose's leading scorer, leveled the game at 2-2 with an unassisted goal at the 25:20 mark.

Campbell took control of the contest with five unanswered goals over the next 15 minutes in a run highlighted by man-up goals from Day and Carter Koontz. Four of Campbell's goals during the stretch were unassisted as the Camels grabbed a 7-2 lead with 10:24 to play in the half.

Maggie Richardson cut Campbell's lead to 7-3 just 30 seconds later, but Hayley Carroll's goal in response rebuilt a five-goal advantage that the Camels would not relinquish the rest of the way. A 4-1 run late in the frame helped to push Campbell to an 11-5 halftime advantage.

The Camels opened the second half with four straight goals from four different players, reaching a running clock with a 10-goal lead, 15-5, after Hitch's goal with 25:59 to play. Richardson cut the deficit back to single digits two minutes later, but Mackenzie Koeller reestablished the double-digit lead with a free position goal at the 20:15 mark.

Campbell would maintain their double-digit lead the rest of the way and outscored the Blue Hose 9-2 in the second half en route to their first conference victory of 2015.

The Camels will remain at home on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. to face Gardner-Webb in the second tilt of a three-game homestand at Barker-Lane Stadium to close out the regular season.
