BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Rebecca Sheinfeld notched her second consecutive hat trick with four goals while Loren Day chipped in with eight points as Campbell defeated Gardner-Webb 20-9 on Sunday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Camels (5-11, 2-4) reached the 20-goal mark for the third time this season, and Day became the first player in program history to record 50 goals in a single season with her five scores. Erica Hitch also tallied a hat trick on Sunday, finishing with three goals.
Both Hitch and Day finished with a trio of assists, and Day led all players with six draw controls on the afternoon. Defensively, Erin O'Hara matched her career-high with five caused turnovers while also scooping up four ground balls for the Camels.
As a team, Campbell forced 20 turnovers, the most in a single game in the program's three-year history, and the Runnin' Bulldogs (0-15, 0-6) finished with 22 total turnovers in the contest.
In goal, Merredith Bechler made eight saves while playing the full 60 minutes. The sophomore, who now has 136 saves this season, surpassed Brittany Kincer's single-season saves mark of 129 set during the 2013 campaign.
Cassidy McDowell led Gardner-Webb with three goals, and Alex Fusco and Monique Martin each added a pair on the afternoon. Fusco and Bryn Hubbard chipped in with one assist apiece.
Raygan Hall led all players with six ground balls and made 14 saves while playing the full 60 minutes in net for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb briefly grabbed a 1-0 lead with a score from Fusco just under five minutes into the contest, but the Camels responded with six straight goals over the next 10 minutes, including a pair from Hitch, to take a 6-1 lead with 15:13 to play in the first half.
Martin's man-up goal and another strike from Emma Rose pulled Gardner-Webb back to within three, but another 4-0 run by Campbell, sparked by two goals from Sheinfeld, ran the lead to 10-3 at the 5:57 mark. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored the final two goals of the half, but Campbell carried a 10-5 advantage heading into the locker room.
The two sides traded three goals apiece over the first seven minutes of the second half, but Campbell forced Gardner-Webb into a 23-minute scoring drought while scoring six goals of its own, three off the stick of Day, to grab a 20-8 lead that the Runnin' Bulldogs would not overcome.
Campbell will return to action next Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. for its final regular season matchup as Coastal Carolina makes the trip to Barker-Lane Stadium. The Camels will be seeking their first win over the Chanticleers in program history.
