Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. - Kayla Reilly gave Campbell an early 1-0 lead, but eight unanswered goals from Longwood stretching into the second half dealt the Camels a 10-6 setback at the Longwood Athletics Complex on Monday afternoon.
Campbell (3-9, 0-2) rallied late with three straight goals and four of the last five scores, but could not overcome the seven-goal Longwood (3-9, 1-1) advantage.
Loren Day brought her season total for goals to 41 after notching a hat trick to lead the Camels in scoring; Reilly, Hayley Carroll and Annie Cook added the other three scores on Monday. Cook and Erica Hitch also tallied one assist apiece.
Merredith Bechler played the full 60 minutes in net for Campbell, making double-digit saves for the second straight contest with 11 stops. Defensively, Kayla Reilly and Kaki Armiger each forced a pair of turnovers.
For Longwood, Katie McHugh led all scorers with five goals on the afternoon, and Sarah Arndt and Lisa Schell each notched two goals. Shiloh McKenzie led all players with four ground balls for the Lancers.
In goal, Christian Acker made 10 saves while playing the full 60 minutes for Longwood.
Reilly gave Campbell the lead just three and a half minutes into the game on a strike assisted by Cook, but the Lancers responded with the final five goals of the opening frame over the next 22 minutes, including two each from McHugh and Schell, to carry a 5-1 lead into the halftime break.
Longwood opened the second half with three more goals over the first five and a half minutes to build an 8-1 advantage before Carroll stopped the run on a free position goal with 20:57 to play.
The Lancers scored two of the next three goals with a Day score in between to grab a 10-3 lead, but Campbell pieced together three unanswered scores over the final 12 minutes to cut the lead to 10-6. Despite the late charge, Campbell could not complete the rally over the last four minutes.
Campbell will return to action with a 3:00 p.m. clash against Winthrop on Friday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium. The Camels will be seeking their first victory in program history over the Eagles.
