HIGH POINT, N.C. - Campbell swept the top three spots in the men's 10,000m run as Lawrence Kipkoech set a meet record en route to claiming the gold on the opening day of the Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday.
Kipkoech's time of 29:51.02 narrowly eclipsed Amon Terer's record set at last year's Big South Championships. The freshman owns the school record in the event as well, turning in a performance of 29:20.11 earlier this season at the Raleigh Relays.
Four Camels advanced past the preliminary events on Thursday and are set to compete in Saturday's finals. Fabian Jarrett advanced in the 200m dash for the men, while Lynette Akai (200m dash), Tatiana Wolfe (400m hurdles) and Joan Maritim (1,500m run) advanced on the women's side.
Following the opening day of action, Campbell's men sit second overall with 31 points, trailing only Liberty's 81 points. On the women's side, Liberty also leads with 58 points and Campbell currently sits ninth overall.
Friday's events will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the men's discus throw and will conclude at approximately 7:00 p.m. with the women's 3,000m steeplechase.
