JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Lawrence Kipkoech became Campbell's first qualifier to reach the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships since 2010 with a seventh-place finish in the 10,000m run at the NCAA East Regional on Thursday evening.
Kipkoech, the 2015 Big South Outdoor Male Freshman of the Year, outperformed his pre-race seeding of 17th and fell within the top 12 spots needed to advance to the Championships in Eugene, Ore., next month. His time of 30:04.26 was also the second-best among all freshmen competing in the event.
Also competing for the Camels was Amon Terer, who narrowly missed joining Kipkoech in Eugene by finishing 13th overall, crossing the line in 30:10.51. Like his teammate, Terer also placed well above his seeding of 21st coming into the competition.
Kipkoech becomes Campbell's first athlete, male or female, to reach the NCAA Championships since Adoniss Jones competed in the 110m hurdles during the 2010 season.
Purdue's Matt McClintock captured first place on Thursday evening, breaking the tape in 29:47.98, nearly five seconds ahead of second-place finisher Brandon Lord of Georgia.
The duo is set to compete again on Saturday evening in the 5,000m run. Three other Camels; Jacob Kipserem, Davian Rhodes and Lilla Juhasz; will also be representing Campbell at the East Regional. Juhasz will compete in the 100m hurdles on Friday at 5:00 p.m., Kipserem will run in the 3,000m steeplechase on Friday at 9:30 p.m. and Rhodes will take on the high jump on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
