JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Amon Terer and Lawrence Kipkoech fell just shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships in the men's 5,000m run, placing 16th and 17th, respectively, in the event at the NCAA East Regional on Saturday evening.
The top five finishers from each of the two heats, as well as the next two fastest times, advanced to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., next month. Virginia Tech's Thomas Curtin came away with the victory, crossing the line in 13:52.05.
Terer and Kipkoech each posted their second-fastest 5,000m times of the season and were the lone Big South representatives in the long-distance run. Terer took 16th overall with a time of 14:20.88, while Kipkoech followed closely and broke the tape in 14:21.14 to finish 17th.
Kipkoech will be Campbell's first competitor since 2010 to reach the NCAA Championships after qualifying for a spot in Eugene in the 10,000m run on Thursday evening. The 2015 Big South Indoor and Outdoor Male Freshman of the Year holds the school records in both the outdoor 5,000m and 10,000m runs.
The freshman is tentatively expected to compete at 9:43 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 10, in the 10,000m run at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
