BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell redshirt junior catcher Steven Leonard has been selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 23rd round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft.
Leonard was the 677th pick of the 2015 MLB Draft after two seasons at Campbell.
The Monument, Colo. native was a Second Team All-Big South selection in 2015, hitting .328 with 31 runs scored and 22 RBI. The redshirt junior added a pair of home runs with eight doubles. Leonard added 29 stolen bases for the Camels.
Leonard was named the Big South Player of the Week on March 3, and was named to the 2015 Johnny Bench Award watch list.
Campbell teammate Cedric Mullins was selected earlier today in the 13th round by the Baltimore Orioles.
This marks the second time in three seasons that multiple Camels have been picked in the MLB Draft, following Matt Marksberry (15th round, Atlanta Braves) and Ben McQuown (30th round, Oakland Athletics) in 2013.
Leonard is the seventh Camel to be taken in the MLB Draft since 2009, joining Ryan Hamme (31st round, Chicago White Sox, 2009), Jake Smith (48th round, San Francisco Giants, 2011), Matt Marksberry (15th round, Atlanta Braves, 2013), Ben McQuown (30th round, Oakland Athletics, 2013), Ryan Thompson (23rd round, Houston Astros, 2014) and Mullins, and the 50th overall in program history.
Campbell finished the season 32-25 overall, securing its fourth-straight 30-win campaign, the first under head coach Justin Haire. CU has won 163 games over the last four seasons.
