EUGENE, Ore. - Lawrence Kipkoech became Campbell's second-ever outdoor track and field All-American on Wednesday evening, finishing 10th in the men's 10,000m run in 29:34.29 to earn Second Team honors at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Kipkoech is the first Camel to become an outdoor All-American since Orville Peterson accomplished the same feat in 1983, placing second overall in the decathlon to earn the distinction.
The freshman maintained his spot in the top 10 throughout the race and broke away with the leaders with just over eight laps remaining. Kipkoech was also one of only two freshmen competing in the race and finished third among underclassmen, placing well above his seeded position of 18th.
The Second Team All-American honors cap a strong freshman season that saw Kipkoech break four school records and claim a pair of Big South championships in the outdoor 5,000m and 10,000m runs. The freshman was named the 2015 Big South Male Freshman of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor campaigns, and claimed the top track honors as the 2015 Big South Outstanding Male Track Performer for the outdoor season as well.
Kipkoech also finishes the season with 12 top-10 finishes in 13 opportunities across all events, falling outside the top 10 just once with a 30th-place finish in the indoor 5,000m at the Husky Classic. In that race, however, the freshman broke the school record in the event with a time of 14:11.06.
Edward Cheserek and Eric Jenkins of Oregon claimed the top two spots in the event, finishing in times of 28:58.92 and 28:59.13, respectively.
Each event at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships crowns 16 All-American competitors, with the first- through eighth-place finishers earning First Team honors and ninth through 16th being named to the Second Team. The remaining athletes earn Honorable Mention All-American distinctions.
