Arlington, Texas – The Camels split their games today 1-1 at the Maverick Classic. CU fell 3-0 (25-13, 30-28, 25-20) to the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi and were victorious against the Tigers of Grambling State 3-0 (25-5, 25-15, 25-13). Campbell finished 1-2 on the weekend.
Jenny Tait earned a spot on the All-Tournament team with her great offensive play. Tait tallied 22 kills on 46 attacks and nine blocks across eight sets throughout the tournament.
"Jenny was strong both offensively and defensively for us in each match. She works extremely hard and it's paying dividends," said head coach Greg Goral on Jenny's achievement.
Next up for the Camels is a matchup against the Aggies of N.C. A&T in Greensboro, N.C. on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 6:30 p.m.
Campbell vs Texas A&M Corpus Christi – 0-3 (13-25, 28-30, 20-25)
"I thought overall we played much better and with more energy than in yesterday's game. We had more kills and digs than Corpus Christi, but we also made more errors. We just need to get into a better rhythm both offensive and defensively," said Goral.
Tait lead the offense with the first double-double of the season for the Camels with a team high 13 kills and close second 25 attacks.
"Jenny did a great job controlling the middle of the court and was a major offensive threat. Even in the game last night against UT Arlington she had a strong presence," said Goral.
Along with Tait, three other Camels recorded 20-plus attacks including freshmen Jessica Stocking (26) and Rachel Harty (23) and sophomore Amelia Armstrong (23).
Rebecca Ramirez led the pace of the offense with 35 assists and the defense as well as with 12 digs. Mary Crema and Kayla Schanback both recorded double digits in digs along with Ramirez tallying 11 each.
The Islanders had five players tallied double-digit attacks though only Kelsee Felux reached ten kills. Kistyn Nicholson set the pace for the offense with 31 assists and Shayla Maldonado and Kate Klepetka led the defense with 12 digs a piece.
Campbell vs Grambling State – 3-0 (25-5, 25-15, 25-13)
"We executed really well against an athletic Grambling team. We put pressure on them with our serves and attacks. I feel good about how we ended the tournament. We are learning how we need to approach each match," said Goral.
Stocking was the leading Camel on offense against the Tigers. She had a double-double with 11 kills and 25 attacks.
"Jessica is working into a rhythm offensively and does a great job on the ball control side. I'm happy with how she is progressing," Goral said.
Madison Linxwiler added 16 attacks and Katelyn Layden and Ra. Harty tallied 15 apiece. Ra. Harty also recorded eight kills and Linxwiler had seven to bolster the Campbell offense.
Ramirez had another 30-plus assist game totaling 31 against Grambling State to pace the offense. Defensively, Layden and Schanback tied with the most digs at 11 each.
Grambling State had five athletes' record double-digits in attacks on offense. Kiara Finley tallied eight digs while Erinkea Mollere and Alleeyah Hensley each recorded seven.Finley also had the most assists for the Tigers with five.
