RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell volleyball fell Friday night, Sept. 18 to NC State in three sets (25-12, 25-13, 25-21). McKenzie Fell lead the offense with nine kills and a block assist while Madison Linxwiler added six kills and a block assist of her own as the Camels move on to 4-7 entering day two of the NC State Double Tree Cary Classic.
"It took us a while to get going," said head coach Greg Goral. "NC State is a really quality team with a lot of quality attackers who put pressure on us for most of the first two games. We finally got more of the momentum in game three and I was more impressed with how out team played. They showed a little more poise in game three and almost pulled it out. If we can start games the way we finish, we are going to win a lot of matches."
The Pack got out to an early lead 7-1 when the Camels got on a roll after a service error by Makenzie Kuchmaner. Mary Crema score a couple quick points on two service errors and Jessica Stocking got a kill to bring the score within three (8-5). The Orange and Black kept it close until a few errors allowed the Pack to get a six point lead (17-11) at the first timeout called by CU. The Camels called their second timeout just minutes later as the score climbed to 21-11. Jenny Tait scored off of a nice kill but the Orange and Black ran out of time and fell in set one to the Wolfpack 25-12. Katelyn Layden tallied three of the teams' seven kills.
Set two started off strong as the Camels trading points with the Wolfpack early. Fell had a kill to tie the score six all before NC State went on an 8-2 run leading into the first timeout (14-8). The Orange and Black got a point off a service error by Kuchmaner before they called their second timeout down 17-9. Tait, Stocking and Fell all recorded kills late in the set as Campbell fell 25-13 to NC State.
After a short intermission, the Camels came back with renewed energy. The Pack got out to an early lead on a few kills, errors and a service ace, but that did not break the Camels who fought to stay within five points at the first timeout (13-8). Campbell got a run going late, after Tait served the ball resulting in a Linxwiler kill and at the second timeout taken by the Camels they trailed just four points (21-17). When action resumed, Fell knocked down a kill followed by an ace from Crema and two NC State errors to bring the score 22-21 and a Pack timeout. The Orange and Black fought hard to catch up but ram out of time as NC State went on to take the third set 25-21.
