BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell earned its first shutout of 2015 and Bradley Farias ran his goalscoring streak to five consecutive matches as the Camels defeated Stetson 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Farias continued his strong run for the Camels (4-3-0) with his eighth goal of the season, notching the match-winner in the 54th minute after being set up by assists from Tunji Osifeso and Josh Signey. The sophomore has scored in all but one of Campbell's seven matches this season.
With Sunday's win, Campbell enters Big South Conference play on a four-match winning streak, its longest since also tallying four straight wins from Oct. 15-Oct. 29, 2011.
"It's been great to get things rolling over the last couple of matches," Signey said of the team's recent run of play. "Going into next weekend, we just have to start again with every game."
"Conference is like a whole new season," Head Coach Dustin Fonder said. "We've got to get a lot better this week because the margins are very thin in conference play. We're challenging the guys to have a great week of training and to hopefully come out with our best performance of the year next Saturday."
Stetson (3-4-1) managed just one shot on goal on the afternoon despite 10 attempts. The Hatters held a 6-5 edge on corner kicks as well, but could not convert on those opportunities.
Matthew Mozynski earned the third shutout of his career and first since defeating Loyola (Md.) 1-0 on Sept. 6, 2014. For Stetson, Paul Ladwig played the full 90 minutes in net, making four saves and surrendering the decisive goal to Farias.
"I think the defense today was stronger because we played a whole 90 minutes," Mozynski said. "Everyone was switched on for the whole game. We've lost some leads this season, but today shows that we're maturing as a team and that we're growing and learning from our mistakes."
"Today should give our back four and our goalkeeper confidence moving forward," Fonder said. "They've been playing better than the scorelines, and to get a clean sheet today should give us confidence going into conference play."
The Hatters applied much of the pressure over the opening 20 minutes of the contest, earning a trio of corners over that span. Despite the early threats, Stetson was unable to place a shot on goal as Lucas Diniz and Julien Coulomb each sent a chance wide right of the net.
Farias gave Campbell its first scoring opportunity of the match in the 24th minute, testing Ladwig on a strong shot from just inside the box. The Stetson keeper was able to get a hand on the ball as he stretched to his right, knocking it out of play for a corner kick.
Campbell threatened again just three minutes later as Seth Jones, coming off his two-goal performance on Friday against Jacksonville, tested Ladwig on a low shot from the left side of the box, but again the keeper was there for the save.
Early in the second half, Michael Clemmons and Jones fired a flurry of shots for the Camels. Clemmons had his attempt parried away by a defender in the 50th minute, while Jones forced Ladwig into a pair of saves less than one minute later as the 0-0 deadlock continued.
The Camels finally broke through at the 53:51 mark to take a 1-0 lead. Streaking up the far sideline, Osifeso played the ball in to Signey, whose short pass found Farias with space inside the box. The reigning Big South Attacking Player of the Week beat Ladwig to the right side to tally his third goal of the weekend.
"I thought Josh was a bright spot for us today," said Fonder. "He had great energy, and as the game wore on, other guys started to match his energy level. He had a decent first half and then stepped up to lead the troops in the second half."
"I always aim to put in 100 percent defensively," Signey said of his performance. "Anything that I do offensively is just a bonus really."
Gianluca Carbone sought the equalizer for the Hatters under a minute later, but Mozynski came up with a big save to maintain the lead. Stetson had four shots over the final 25 minutes, but was unable to test Mozynski any further.
Campbell will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 26, at 7:00 p.m. as the Camels open Big South play against Longwood at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The Camels lead the all-time series 2-1-1 over the Lancers, but dropped last year's meeting 4-2 in Farmville, Va.
