BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Senior Marissa Hartert buried her first goal of the season as Campbell claimed the 1-0 victory against Charleston Southern Wednesday evening.
The lone tally occurred in the 37th minute for the Marvin, N.C. native. Murita Storey placed a deep cross to Ashley Clark on the opposite side of field. Clark was able to play a cross back towards goal for Hartert who was had a short tap-in.
"I was thrilled and excited to get on the scoreboard," Hartert said. "We've worked on movement all season in training and converting on the final shot so I was ready to move on get another goal."
Neither team was able to find the break through as play was back and forth in the midfield for opening 14 minutes. In the 14th minute, Payton Ormsby was able to get fire the opening shot but was blocked by a Buccaneer defender.
Charleston Southern (2-3-2, 0-1-0) recorded its first shot of the contest in the 18th minute as Anna Sells sent a header beyond the left post of Alexis Connors.
During an 18-minute span, Campbell (6-3-0, 1-0-0) increased the tempo, recording eight shots and applying immense pressure on the Buccaneers defensive line. The Fighting Camels continued their intensity and they were rewarded with Hartert's tally in the 37th minute.
Two minutes later, Hartert nearly found the back of the net for her second of the match as she deflected a cross on frame, requiring the Charleston Southern goalkeeper to make a diving save.
Campbell finished the first half with 10 shots, including three on frame compared to the three total shots and one on frame of Charleston Southern,. The Fighting Camels also recorded the lone corner kick of the opening half in the 40th minute.
The shot bonanza continued in the second half for the Orange and Black as they recorded five shots in the first five minutes. The visitors generated offense of their own shortly after as they earned a pair of corner kicks including a header effort from Lydia Frierson.
"I'm happy because we're evolving better offensively as a team by finding more shots," said head coach Stuart Horne. "I like the direction the team is headed and it's a tribute to how competitive our training environment has been."
Continually throughout the half, Campbell was able to get shot attempts towards goal as the team registered 13 shots in the second half. In total, the 23 shots is the most for the squad this season, surpassing the 21 shot mark recorded against South Carolina State on Sept. 2. They finished the match with seven total shots on target and holding a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Connors made two saves while fending off multiple corner kicks en route to her fourth shutout of the campaign.
Action continues for Campbell women's soccer on Saturday at 5 p.m. versus UNC Asheville inside the Eakes Athletic Complex.
