BUIES CREEK – Campbell volleyball falls to 2-3 on the season after being defeated by UNC Wilmington 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-19). Nicole Lott recorded 13 kills for the Seahawks in the Camels home opener Friday night during the Hampton Inn and Suites of Holly Springs Invitational.
Jenny Tait and Katelyn Layden both recorded six kills and Rachel Harty tagged on an additional five for the Camels against in-state rival UNC Wilmington. Mary Crema led the Camel defense with 10 digs and Summer Schuitema was close behind with eight while also collecting eight assists. Rebecca Ramirez set the pace offensively with 12 assists.
Lott led the Seahawks with 13 of the teams 35 kills. Lindsay Hartmann led the defense with 16 digs as the team went on to record 44 as a whole. Alyssa Desjardins dished out 24 assists for the Seahawks who moved to 4-0 for the season.
Harty recorded two of the Camels six kills of the first set and Amelia Armstrong dug the ball three times to lead the CU defense. The Camels were down 12-5 when they took their first timeout after the Seahawks scored off of six kills and a handful of CU errors. Campbell came within six points of Wilmington but were unable to catch the visitors who finished the set 25-12. UNC Wilmington recorded 14 kills to the Camels six, including Lott who tallied five and added six digs, during the first set,
Campbell was within arm's reach early on in the second set, but the Seahawks managed to slip away after a series of errors and kills. Campbell tallied nine kills and 15 digs to the Seahawks 11 kills and 14 digs. Layden recorded four of her six kills in the second set and three Camels, Rebecca Ramirez, Schuitema and Crema, tallied three digs a piece. UNC Wilmington had the edge throughout the set and finished 25-11.
Set three finished closer that the first two of the match. The Camels scored off of three kills and an attacking error by Borgiotti to go into the first time out down 11-4. After the break, the Orange and Black went on to score eight points heading into the second called time out with a 17-12 score. Campbell kept the set close and it came down a few points in which the Seahawks won the set 25-19. Tait and Harty each contributed three kills and Crema registered six digs in the third set.
The Camels will return to action Saturday, Sept. 5 for a double header. They are set to face Norfolk State at 12:30 p.m. and Sacramento State at 7 p.m.
