WILMINGTON, N.C. - Campbell and Elon battled to a scoreless first half on Friday evening, but two second-half goals by the Phoenix dealt the Camels a 2-0 setback in the opening match of the Courtyard by Marriott Wrightsville Beach Classic.

Caue Da Silva and Jaiden Fortune found the back of the net for Elon (3-0-0), who matched the Camels (0-2-0) with five shots on goal. In addition, the Phoenix held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks on the evening.

Redshirt senior Ricki Gaez led Campbell with a pair of shots on goal, both of which came in the opening half. Elon's Da Silva led all players with three of the Phoenix's five shots on frame.

In goal, Elon's Matthew Jegier played the full 90 minutes and earned the shutout after making five saves. Redshirt sophomore Matthew Mozynski was also in net for the full match for Campbell, making three saves.

Campbell came out of the gate with three shots in the first 10 minutes of the match, the first on an attempt by Gaez just two minutes into the contest that pressed Jegier into action. Freshmen Josh Signey and Gabe Parrish also challenged the Phoenix early, but neither could put their chances on goal.

Elon had its first chance in the 20th minute as Da Silva found space, but Mozynski stepped up with his first save of the match to keep the Phoenix off the board.

Eduardo Alvarez had a chance to give Elon a 1-0 lead just before halftime, but his shot sailed wide of the goal and the 0-0 deadlock continued through the break.

The Phoenix grabbed a 1-0 advantage at the 55:01 mark on Da Silva's goal. Mozynski made the initial save against Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler, but Da Silva collected the rebound and put it into the net for the one-goal lead.

Junior Tunji Osifeso nearly equalized for the Camels in the 64th minute, getting off a shot that was ultimately stopped by Jegier.

Elon reached the final scoreline on a strike by Fortune at 71:16. Following a long run, Fortune pulled back and scored to the far post from 25 yards out, giving the Phoenix a 2-0 lead.

Campbell will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in its second match of the Courtyard by Marriott Wrightsville Beach Classic and will face UNC Wilmington. Sunday's matchup will be the 50th all-time meeting between the two sides, with the Camels holding a 26-21-2 advantage in the series.
