BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Camels split their double header defeating the Spartans of Norfolk State in three sets (25-11, 25-17, 26-24) and later losing to Sacramento State in four (25-22, 12-25, 17-25, 18-25) on day two of the Hampton Inn and Suites of Holly Springs Invitational. Campbell moves to 3-4 on the season with an exhibition game scheduled for Sunday Sept. 6 against the Italian Junior National Team at 3 p.m. at John W. Pope Convocation Center.
Game 1 – Campbell 3 – Norfolk State 0
The Camels topple the Spartans of Norfolk State in three sets (25-11, 25-17, 26-24) on day two of the Hampton Inn and Suites of Holly Springs Invitational. Campbell took the first game of the day following a strong performance from Amelia Armstrong who had eight kills, five service aces and assisted in two blocks. Campbell controlled the first two sets against the Spartans with solid offensive presence from Armstrong, Jenny Tait, Katelyn Layden and Rachel Harty.
The Camels held a 13-7 going into the first timeout taken by Norfolk State. The Orange and Black had nine kills to that point and continued to roll throughout the remainder of the set. McKenzie Fell, Layden and Harty each contributed three kills and Armstrong added an additional two. Layden also added three digs and Rebecca Ramirez dished out six assists. Campbell went on to win the set 25-11 after recording 13 kills on 25 attacks with 11 assists and 10 digs.
As set two commenced the Camels and Spartans traded points. At the first timeout Campbell held a small lead of 13-10 off of six kills and some NSU errors. CU started to gain momentum off of a couple of kills and some errors by NSU leading into the second timeout 18-13. Coming out of the break Armstrong led off with a pair of aces that helped lead the way for a Campbell 25-17 win in set two. The Camels recorded 11 kills on 28 attacks and nine assists and blocks.
The Spartans came out swing in the third set taking advantage of the intermission. The Camels scored the first point but let a series of errors allow the Green and Gold into the game. At the first timeout the score was 13-12 in favor of the Camels though the Spartans were not backing down. After four kills by Armstrong and some NSU errors, CU held a 20-17 lead. The Spartans came back to tie the game after the break and both teams went back and forth until the Camels emerged the winners with a score of 26-24 in the third set. The Orange and Black earned 14 kills on 42 attacks and dished out 13 assists and 19 digs.
Game 2 – Sacramento State 3 – Campbell 1
The Camels fell in their second game to Sacramento State in four sets (25-22, 12-25, 17-25, 18-25). The home team played a strong first set but let off the pressure offensively to allow the Hornets to get into the game and take the next three sets. Three of the Sacramento State players earned double digits in kills and Kennedy Kurtz recorded 43 assists.
Campbell started off the first set a little slow allowing Sac. St. to score a handful of points off of errors. The Camels tied the set at six on a kill by Tait and traded points back and forth until a kill by Layden making the score 14-12. Sac. St. called its first timeout after an ace by Crema putting the score at 17-13. Coming out of the timeout the Hornets got into a rhythm and tied the game at 18 before the Camels pulled away to finish off the set 25-22. The Orange and Black recorded 11 kills on 51 attacks with 11 assists and 37 digs.
Entering set two the Camels carried some momentum from the first set to scorethe first point. Sac. St. would swap points with the home team until they benefitted off of a few CU errors. At the first timeout the Hornets led 8-4 and would never give up the lead for remainder of the set. Campbell struggled blocking the middle and allowed nine kills, eight assists and 12 digs as Sac. St took the set 25-12.
After a ten minute intermission, Campbell started the third set off strong. The home team scored quick but allowed the visitors to catchup after giving up points on errors. The Hornets tied the game at six and took the lead going into the first timeout 9-6. Campbell would come within four points to bring the score 20-16 at the second timeout called by Sac. St. but could not catchup in time to win the set. The Hornets took set three 25-17 on 14 kills, 15 assists and 22 digs.
The Camels started off set four on a slow note allowing the Hornets to score a quick six points. Campbell would score on a few errors and kills heading into the first timeout down 6-14. The Orange and Black came out of the break hot, scoring a quick six points to bring the set within three. The Hornets countered both offensive and defensively and went on to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
Harty tallied 10 kills while Madison Linxwiler had seven of her own as the Camels totaled 39 for the match. Ramirez and Schuitema dished out 19 and 13 assists, respectively, for a team total of 37. Five Campbell players recorded double digit digs as the team tallied 91 as Crema led the team with 26.
The Orange and Black return to play Sunday, Sept. 6 against the Italian Junior National team. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Gore Arena.
