RADFORD, Va. --- Krystal Mangum missed the game-tying three pointer at the buzzer as Radford held off Campbell for a 62-59 victory at the Dedmon Center Monday night. The Lady Camels (7-8, 2-4 BSC) rallied from a 17-point fourth-period deficit to earn the attempt to send the game to overtime.
Mangum led the charge in the comeback with 14 fourth-period points. Amanda Coffer tallied 18 points for the second-straight game to earn her 11th double-figure scoring effort of the season.
MaKala Rouse scored a career-high 11 points while RaeChaun Edwards dished out a season-high 10 assists. Coffer and Bria Emanuel each pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
An early Mangum jumper in the fourth capped a 6-0 run to cut the Radford (8-7, 4-2) lead to 50-39 with 7:45 to play. Hannah Long converted an old fashion three-point play to bring CU back within single digits of the lead at 54-45 at 5:28.
Another Mangum jumper brought the Lady Camels back within seven, but Aisha Foy nailed a three on the other end to increase the Highlander advantage to 57-47 with 3:30 to play. Mangum stayed hot with a three ball to answer, and scored the next three Campbell points on a layup and free throw to draw CU within four at 57-53 with 1:36 on the clock.
The Highlander lead was back to seven (61-54) after Gaby Gilmore hit a pair of free throws with 46 seconds remaining. Mangum missed a three on the other end, but hit a layup after two missed free throws by Lydia Rivers to cut the score to 61-56 with 24 seconds on the clock.
After Gilmore tallied a free throw, a three pointer by Coffer made the lead just three with seven seconds on the clock. Rivers missed two free throws on the other end setting up the Lady Camels to tie the game and head to overtime. Campbell raced up the court, and Mangum got a solid look at the basket but the shot fell short of the front iron.
Foy led all scorers with 23 points for the Highlanders while Janayla White tallied a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds. Gilmore scored 12 points and had five assists.
Radford jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with the help of a three pointer by Foy. CU responded with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Coffer three, to take its first lead of the game at 9-7. The Lady Camels re-took the lead at 15-14 on a Rouse layup after an Edwards steal with 1:18 on the clock.
The lead grew to four after a Coffer layup at 27 seconds to play in the first, but she was whistled for her second foul on a Foy layup with four seconds on the clock. CU led RU 19-17 after the first period with 17 points coming from Rouse and Coffer.
The Highlanders opened the second period on an 8-0 spurt and took a 25-19 lead with seven minutes to play in the frame. The Lady Camels got on the scoreboard in the second with 5:26 on the clock and broke an 11-0 scoring run for RU trailing 28-21.
Jordan Tooley hit back-to-back three pointers to give RU its first double-digit lead of the game at 31-21 with 3:51 on the clock in the second. Sarah Smith and Destinee Walker traded layups before Edwards nailed a three pointer to cut the RU advantage to 34-27 with 1:23 on the clock, and that score stood until halftime. Both teams shot relatively evenly in the first half with the Highlanders holding a narrow 44.8 to 40.0 percent advantage.
The teams traded points in four-straight possessions two minutes into the third as RU held a 39-31 advantage with 7:32 on the clock. Foy nailed a three to increase the Highlander lead to 11 before Rouse hit a fast break layup as the score stood at 42-33 midway through the third.
The Lady Camels were held without a field goal for the final 5:38 of the third period as the Highlanders scored six points during the stretch to take a 48-33 lead after three periods.
CU caused 17 Radford turnovers and capitalized with 22 points. The Lady Camels outscored the Highlanders 32-24 in the paint and 24-11 in bench points.
Campbell returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 17) when it returns home to take on High Point at Gore Arena. Tipoff is set for 1 PM in a game that will be televised regionally by the American Sports Network.
