BLACKSBURG, Va. – Campbell track & field finished its first two-day meet of the year at the Virginia Tech Invitational, Jan. 15 and 16, at the Rector Fieldhouse.
"Both squads really stepped it up this weekend," head coach Michael Kelly said. "Our women especially had a really good meet. A couple school records went down (60-meter hurdles and triple jump) and a slew of personal bests were achieved from nearly every one of our women competing. Sabina crushed the previous school record with a jump of 12.50 and Lilla also bested her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles. As of right now Sabina's mark is No. 20 in the country Lilla No. 38. The top-16 qualify for NCAA."
On the women's side, Tatiana Wolfe finished the 200-meter race with a time of 25.49 seconds, improving her time from last week by 0.67 seconds. Jocelyn Culbreath also improved her time from last week's 200-meter race by 0.72 seconds. Deonica Reid also represented the Fighting Camels in the 200-meter race as well as the 60-meter dash.
Culbreath continued to improve her marks as she ran a 57.88 in the 400-meter dash, knocking off 1.93 seconds from her previous time last week. Racheal Brown recorded a better mark in the 400-meter race with her 59.31 time in the race.
"Other big performances were from Tatiana 200-meter, Jocelyn 300-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter, Shenelle in Long jump," Kelly stated. "Roshae had two great races in the 800-meter and 1-mile. Joan also had a solid 1-mile race."
Last week's 800-meter race winner, Roshae Jackson, finished third in this weekend's race at 2:16.11, over five seconds quicker than last week's mark. Joan Maritim competed in the 800-meter race as well for Campbell. Maritim also finished sixth in the 1-mile race for Campbell.
Wolfe and Lilla Juhasz both competed in the 60-meter hurdles final, with Juhasz finished second at 8.47 seconds, .01 behind the first place runner. Wolfe finished in sixth for the Orange and Black.
Shenelle McKay finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the women's high jump with a jump of 1.63-meters. She also competed in the women's long jump, placing eighth in the event.
Sabina Allen and Jaszlyn Jenkins both represented the Fighting Camels in the women's triple jump. Allen finished with a 12.50-meter mark, finishing second in the flight overall.
A trio of Camels competed in the 60-meter dash as well as the 200-meter dash on the men's side, including Khai McLin and Chigozie Atavwigho who competed in both events. Ataviwigho also ran in the 300-meter event, where he finished ninth with a 35.90 mark.
"Although there weren't any serious personal best's the men really had a good meet as well," Kelly said. "I feel like our returning guys are back to where we left off at the end of last year, which is a really good thing. Our freshmen guys are adjusting fast to the indoor season and have really improved from last week."
Cornelius Scott and Atavigho both represented Campbell in the men's 400-meter race. Atavwigho improved from last week's time with his 51.91 mark. Scott improved by more than two seconds as he crossed the finish line at 51.31.
Mason Holt and Jacob Kipserem ran the 5,000-meter race for Campbell, with Kipserem running a 15:43.14 time, placing him fourth overall behind the trio from Army West Point.
For the men's high jump, Davian Rhodes finished second with a 2.05-meter jump, .04 meters higher than last week's mark. Chase Edwards finished in a tie for 11th place at 1.90-meters in the high jump.
Lorne Jenkins finished the men's long jump with a .26-meter jump longer than last week's distance, as he went 7.14-meters this weekend. Jenkins also went 14.72-meters in the men's triple jump.
Campbell continues the 2016 season in Winston Salem, N.C. at the UNCG Spartan Challenge, Sunday Jan. 24.
