Lady Camels suffer home loss to High Point

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Campbell was dealt a 69-55 loss to High Point in the first ever women's basketball game played on a Sunday in Buies Creek. Amanda Coffer led the Lady Camels (7-9, 2-5 BSC) with 14 points.

Coffer added a team-high six rebounds in addition to her 12th double figure scoring effort of the season. Summer Price tallied nine points after missing the last three games with an injury. Bria Emanuel and MaKala Rouse each scored seven points and pulled down three rebounds. RaeChaun Edwards had six steals and six assists to go with five rebounds and four points.

High Point (5-11, 4-3) was led by Lindsey Edwards, who had a game-high 19 points. Haleigh Hatfield recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 points. Emma Bockrath and Shea Morgan finished with 14 and 10 points respectively.

The Lady Camels started quick with the first seven points of the game, with five coming from Emanuel. The Panthers answered with an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the contest at 13-12 with just under a minute to play in the first. A pair of Coffer free throws with three seconds to play in the frame gave CU a 14-13 lead after one period.

Morgan hit two free throws to knot the game at 16-16 with 7:02 on the clock in the second. Campbell was held scoreless for five minutes before a Price jumper tied the game at 18-18. Bockrath and Coffer traded three pointers as the game sat tied at 21-21 with 3:15 on the clock.

A layup by Hannah Long tied the game at 25-25 as the tight second period was nearing a close with 1:31 to play. Jumpers by Edwards and Bockrath gave HPU a 29-25 lead with 23 seconds before halftime. However, Krystal Mangum nailed a three pointer with just eight seconds on the clock to cut the Panther advantage to 29-28 at the half.

Rouse tied the game for the fifth time with a free throw to knot the score at 29-29 with 8:53 to play in the third period. HPU answered with a 6-1 spurt to take a 37-30 lead and took its first double-digit advantage of the contest at 46-36 with 2:34 remaining in the frame after four-straight points.

The Panthers closed the stanza with six of the final eight points to take a 52-38 lead to the fourth period. The Lady Camels were held to just 18.2 percent shooting in the third (2-for-11) and committed five turnovers.

CU came out firing in the fourth period, opening the frame on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 52-46 with 7:33 left to play. Later, the High Point lead was ten before a Caroline Bowns layup brought the Lady Camels within eight at 57-49 with 5:12 on the clock.

The Panthers answered with a 10-2 run to take its largest lead of the day at 67-51 with 1:15 remaining. HPU held CU without a field goal for over four minutes before Price hit a running layup with 44 seconds to play. Hatfield closed the game out with a pair of free throws before High Point headed home with the victory.

Campbell held a 28-24 edge in points in the paint and forced 18 Panther turnovers, two above its season average. However, the Lady Camels were plagued by 53.3 percent shooting from the free throw stripe (16-for-30).

The Lady Camels will be back in action on Tuesday night when they play host to Presbyterian. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside Gore Arena.
