BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell women's tennis also will head to Florida this weekend, as they will compete against Bethune-Cookman and Embry-Riddle in their season-opening weekend. The Camels take on the Wildcats Friday, Jan. 29 at 12 p.m. and follow with a match against the Eagles on Saturday, Jan. 30. at 10 a.m.

"First and foremost we are just ready to get the season underway," said head coach David Johnson. "We have done what we can to prepare and we will see more evidence of that first hand this weekend in the matches we will be playing. I'm looking to get started and go from there and I think the team is too."

The women were picked as the fifth seed in the Big South Conference preseason coaches polls released earlier this month. The team returns four seniors in Kirsten, Muad, Ana and Ewa, as well as sophomore Irina Karangozishvili and Georgina Segarra.

Coach Johnson added four newcomers that he will work into the lineup this season to mix new and returning players. Claire Bedi, Isabel Boada and Georgia Dobell join as the freshman class of 2020 while sophomore Nina Asanin also joins the team in the 2015-16 season.

"We have four seniors on the women's side with Kirsten, Muad, Ana and Ewa. There is certainly a little bit more experience on the ladies side but on the opposite side we have a lot of new players as well and what we need is for some of those players to break through. Some lack a little confidence in match play and hopefully by getting underway we can benefit in both those areas."

Friday's match is the first time in two seasons that Campbell will go up against Bethune-Cookman on the tennis courts. In the last encounter, the Wildcats defeated the Camels 5-2 on March 4, 2014, at Bethune-Cookman.

The match between Campbell and Embry-Riddle will be the first time the two schools will meet on the courts. The women's team has claimed five Sunshine State Conference championships over the last decade, claiming the 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014 titles.

Following the weekend matches, the women's tennis team will return to the Creek for their home opener against Wingate on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. on the Nesbit Tennis Courts.
